Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Center Jujhar Khaira (KAIR-ah, JOO-jar), who suited up in 59 games for the Everett Silvertips in 2013-14, made his National Hockey League debut on Saturday with the Edmonton Oilers at Consol Energy Center, in a 3-2 shootout victory over the host Pittsburgh Penguins.
Khaira, 21, recorded three hits, a blocked shot and one shot on goal in 10:02 of ice time for Edmonton, suiting up in jersey #54. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound forward is the 15th player, all-time to suit up for the Silvertips in 13 seasons and make his NHL debut.
He skated at the NCAA level for Michigan Tech for one season, ranking third in scoring as a freshman with 25 points (6g-19a) in 37 games before committing to the Silvertips for the 2013-14 season. Khaira's rights were originally acquired on May 3, 2012 by the Silvertips along with first round and third round selections from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for left wing Jari Erricson, a first round, and conditional fourth round selections.
Upon signing an NHL entry-level contract as a third round selection of Edmonton in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, he suited up with the Silvertips in 59 games in 2013-14, ranking fourth in scoring with 44 points (16g-28a) and recording a +5 rating. He also tied for the club's lead in postseason scoring with four points in five games, currently ranking as one of only three players in Silvertips history to record a hat trick in the playoffs (Mar. 28 vs. Seattle).
Khaira has seven points (3g-4a) in 16 games this season with Edmonton's American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors and joins Byron Froese (Toronto Maple Leafs) as two former Silvertips players who have made their NHL debut in 2015-16.
The Silvertips hit the road for a 5:05 p.m. (1380 AM/WHL Live) game against the host Spokane Chiefs at Spokane Arena tomorrow, and return home next Wednesday, Dec. 2 for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Tri-City Americans.
