RoughRiders Pull Away
November 28, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A penalty-filled matchup went to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday, 5-1 against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Cedar Rapids forechecking pressure created the only goal of the first period. Although they were shorthanded, Cal Burke took the puck away along the left boards, starting a two-on-one rush capped by Matt Filipe's redirection.
Cedar Rapids broke through on the power play - their fourth of eight advantages - at 6:37. Hugh McGing's blast from the right point made it through traffic and past Drew Hotte to build the lead to 2-0.
Sam Sternschein and Ross Colton both added third period rebound goals, but a RoughRiders miscue in the final minute of regulation provided the opportunity for Garrett Wait to end Ben Blacker's shutout with a breakaway goal. Filipe added one more Cedar Rapids score in the final minute into an empty net.
The Hawks' next matchup is against the other member of the Dupaco Cowbell Cup Series, the Dubuque Fighting Saints, next Saturday at Mystique Ice Center.
