Game Story

An evenly matched first period didn't see its first goal until the 16:30 mark. With the Pats rolling in three-on-two, Connor Hobbs' shot was blocked in front of Cody Porter. The puck ricocheted straight to Jake Leschyshyn who banged in his third of the season to open the scoring. It only took Jakob Stukel nine seconds to bring things to even footing. The Calgary forward grabbed the puck off the ensuing faceoff, picked his way through multiple Pats and finished on the backhand. Both teams came up empty on powerplay opportunities in the frame and went to the intermission tied 1-1.

The Hitmen carried the play early in the second period, but they couldn't break through the Pats who held the line in their own zone. Jordan Hollett helped that along, making a pair of great pad saves in quick succession to keep the game tied. With the Blue and White on the powerplay, Taylor Cooper freed up the puck behind the net and swung it out to Sergey Zborovskiy at the point. The Russian defender wristed a shot that was deflected by Colton Kroeker and found its way to the back of the net at the 13:11 mark. The Pats held the lead for just over four minutes this time. On a powerplay of their own, the Hitmen freed up Stukel in the slot and he snapped in his second of the night to tie the game 2-2 sending the game to the third period tied 2-2.

Again, it took until late in the frame for the goals to come. Following a powerplay, Leschyshyn grabbed a rebound off the back glass and jammed it just inside the post and past Porter to give the Pats back the lead with five minutes left. The Hitmen would come back again. With just seconds left, a scramble in front of the net resulted in Layne Bensmiller freeing the puck up for Travis Sanheim to bury it into the yawning cage with 14.2 seconds left. That only set the stage for a 16-year old to play hero. After the Pats were unsuccessful with a powerplay in overtime, Leschyshyn tipped Zborovskiy's point shot on net. The rookie grabbed his own rebound and completed the hat-trick to send the Pats to their first win in Calgary since 2011 by a 4-3 score.
