Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

CHICAGO - Chicago Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar picked up his second win of the season, and forward Tanner Laczynski added two goals in a 3-1 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday night.

Vladar's 32-save performance included a few gigantic saves in the final frame of which the Steel were outshot 13-4. The gargantuan goaltender made a ten-bell stop on a shot in the slot from Petter Mäkitalo with precious minutes remaining in regulation time.

He repeatedly denied chance after chance for Dubuque, stopping 12 shots in the first period, all seven in the second period, and 13 more in the third.

Billy Sweezey put Chicago up in the second period, on the other end of a 2-on-1 break for the Fighting Saints. His wrist shot off of a cross-ice feed from Max Zimmer, elevated over Jaxon Castor's shoulder, and put the Steel up by one goal. That goal, halfway through the second, was the game-winner.

Castor made 15 saves on Friday, and picked up an assist in the game.

Dubuque's fortunes turned early after being shut out on Wednesday night in Green Bay. Baron Thompson capped off a tremendous play by defenseman Joey Keane, tapping home a cross-crease look five minutes into the game. It was Thompson's first USHL goal, and Keane's first USHL point.

Chicago did not take long to tie the game up at one apiece. Tanner Laczynski followed up a rebound of a shot taken by Brandon Duhaime at the front of the net and shelfed the shot home. It was Laczynski's fifth goal of the season, and team-leading 20th point of the season. Castor had initially laid out to deny Duhaime, but Laczynski moved into a good spot to score.

Laczynski would add his 21st point of the season, capping the game off with an empty-net goal with Castor at the bench for the extra attacker.

The loss was Dubuque's second in a row, and third in the last four games. Chicago has now won four of the last five games. Neither team capitalized on their respective power play opportunities.

The home-and-home concludes with another tussle with the Steel at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday with a special start time of 6:05 p.m. Join the Fighting Saints as they celebrate No-Shave November, sponsored by UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital. Special jerseys will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Finley Health Foundation and the Wendt Regional Cancer Center.
