K-Wings Can't Duck Mallards on Road

November 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

MOLINE, IL- The Kalamazoo Wings outshot the Quad City Mallards, 35-21, on Friday night, but were unable to squeak more than one goal past the reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week, Steve Michalek, in a 3-1 loss at the iWireless Center in Moline.

The scoring was started by Kalamazoo early in period number one after a terrific individual effort by Tanner Sorenson. After tipping a Ludwig Blomstrand pass over a defender, Sorenson wedged the rolling puck over the shoulder of Steve Michalek and into the goal for his third of the year.

Only 39 seconds would pass before the Mallards pulled even in the first period. Sam Warning found an open area in the high slot in front of the Kalamazoo goal and pulled the trigger on a one-timer off a pass from Matt Neal. It was Warning's second goal of the year and tied the score at 1-1.

Quad City were able to take their first lead of the game eight minutes later. Capitalizing off a defensive zone turnover, Guillaume Gelinas created a two-on-one and fed Ryan Tesink, who was able to tap the puck in along the backdoor to make it 2-1 Mallards, a score that would hold until the end of the period.

Warning would add yet another marker early in the second to give Quad City a multi-goal lead, 4:15 into the second period. The winger used his speed along the right side and raced in on Joel Martin, who couldn't prevent the quick wrist shot of Warning's from leaking into the goal.

Kalamazoo outshot Quad City, 13-2, in the third period, but were unable to chip away at the Mallards' lead, as Quad City held on for the win.

Notes: It was the first matchup between the Wings and the Mallards since the 2007 season, when both teams were members of the UHL. Blomstrand exited the game late in the second period and didn't return. Kalamazoo had a season-low two penalty minutes. It was game five of a five-game road stand for Kalamazoo, who return home Sunday before embarking on a four-game road trip.
