Admirals Skate Past Gulls, 3-1

MILWAUKEE, WI - Frederick Gaudreau's goal with 2:23 remaining in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie, and the Milwaukee Admirals (11-4-1) went on to post a 3-1 victory over the San Diego Gulls in front of a snowstorm-reduced crowd of 3,764 at Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The win was the Admirals' ninth straight, tying a franchise record, while the Gulls were dealt their fifth consecutive loss.
A game effort and improved discipline were not enough for the San Diego Gulls (9-6-0-1) to emerge victorious at the end of a three-game road trip, which saw the team play in three states over four nights. After taking nine minor penalties in a 7-4 loss on Friday night, San Diego was sent to the box only twice against Milwaukee, killing both.
An early goal by Milwaukee rookie winger Kevin Fiala gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead 3:28 into the contest, as the Swiss teenager beat Gibson high on the glove side after taking one step out from the goal line.
The Gulls answered quickly on their first power play of the night, with veteran center Chris Mueller squeezing a snap shot between the pads of Admirals goalie Marek Manzanec for a 1-1 tie. The assists went to Shea Theodore and Brandon Montour; for Montour, his AHL-leading tenth power play assist of the season.
Tied 1-1 after twenty minutes, the Gulls controlled the run of play for much of the second period but were unable to beat Manzanec for a go-ahead goal. Instead, with less than three minutes to play, Milwaukee negotiated a breakout from the Gulls zone, with Viktor Arvidsson gaining the blue line on the left wall. He held outside the circle then perfectly fed a pass to Gaudreau, who walked in alone on Gulls goalie John Gibson and beat him on a forehand-to-backhand deke for an Admirals 2-1 lead.
The goal checked a number of boxes for the Admirals, not only triggering their ninth straight victory, but also a three-game goals streak for Gaudreau, and an AHL-best twelve-game points streak for Arvidsson.
San Diego found the whistle to their liking in the third period on road ice, as Milwaukee was called for four consecutive penalties, including twenty-four seconds of two-man advantage. Despite repeatedly pressuring Manzanec, the Gulls could not find the net on any of their four power play tries, and the Admirals capped the score line with an Adam Payerl empty-netter in the final twenty-two seconds of play, giving Arvidsson a second assist in the game.
The Gulls return home for games on Wednesday night against the Texas Stars and Friday night against the Ontario Reign, before heading to Ontario to finish a home-and-home set on Saturday.
