Heartbreak in Hershey: Bears Sink Pirates in Final Minute

Hershey, PA - Hershey Bears defenseman Connor Carrick bounced a wrist shot past Portland Pirates goalie Mike McKenna with just 14.8 seconds left in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie. The shorthanded goal lifted the Bears (8-5-0-3) past the Pirates (7-7-0-0) by a score of 3-2 at the Giant Center on Friday night. The defeat snapped Portland's four-game winning streak, while the Bears won their second straight game.

Portland opened the scoring at 12:36 of the first period as Logan Shaw slashed down the left wing and snapped a forehand shot to the short side on Hershey goalie Justin Peters for his sixth goal of the season. John McFarland picked up the primary assist, giving him 100 points for his professional career. Mike Matheson also assisted on the tally.

The Bears would even the game at 8:06 of the second period on the power play when Chris Bourque banked a backhander from the left circle off of a Pirates defenseman and into the net for his fifth goal of the season. Aaron Ness and Carter Camper got helpers on the goal, which was Hershey's first power play goal in its last 33 chances.

Hershey took its first lead of the game 2:41 into the third period as Dustin Gazley banged in a Ryan Stanton rebound for his fourth goal of the campaign. Chris Brown also had an assist.

Dylan Olsen tied the game again for Portland with his first of the season just 31 seconds later. Wayne Simpson got the only assist.

Carrick's shorthanded winner was his third goal of the year. Ness picked up his second assist of the night, while Garrett Mitchell also got a helper.

Peters made 22 saves for Hershey to improve to 4-2-2 on the year. McKenna stopped 29, but saw his personal four-game winning streak come to an end. He is now 6-5-0 on the season.

Portland and Hershey will face off again tomorrow night at the Giant Center at 7:00 p.m. "Voice of the Pirates" Jeff Mannix has all the action, beginning with the Pirates Pregame Show, Served by Dunkin Donuts, on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network, Presented by Napa Auto Parts, at 6:40 on 95.9 and 95.5 FM.

The Pirates return home to the Cross Insurance Arena for two games on Black Friday Weekend against the Utica Comets on Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night's game is the Pirates' Annual Teddy Bear Toss Game. Bring a new stuffed toy to the game and throw it on the ice when the Pirates score their first goal. All donations will go to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.
