Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Michael Houser turned away 42 shots and Matt Leitner scored the game-winner, as the Manchester Monarchs opened their three-game-series against the Norfolk Admirals with a 2-1 victory Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
The Monarchs (7-6-0-0) scored on two power plays, holding the Admirals (5-10-0-0) scoreless on three chances.
"That was a good win for us," Head Coach Rich Seeley said. "We saw a lot of little things that were good. I thought it was one of our more well-rounded team efforts from the goaltender out."
After two scoreless periods of hockey, Michael Boivin finally broke the silence with his 2nd goal of the year at 3:05 of the third period. Playing 5-on-3, Boivin took a pass on the offensive blue line from David Kolomatis and sent the one-timer past Admirals goaltender, Tyler Beskorowany.
The Monarchs quickly doubled their lead just :34 seconds later, when Matt Leitner netted his 4th goal of the season. Picking up a rebound from Yann Sauve's shot, Leitner lifted the puck short side at 3:39.
Norfolk answered back with a high slap shot from Tommy Mele at 10:02 of the third period. Steven Whitney fed Mele a long pass, and Mele fired his shot over the stick shoulder of Houser, cutting the Manchester lead back to one.
Norfolk pulled Beskorowany with 1:04 left in the third period, but could not solve Houser.
The Monarchs continue their home stand tomorrow, Nov. 21 (7 p.m.), against the Norfolk Admirals at the Jungle for "90's Night". Scrunchies and wind pants are encouraged, and the first 4,000 fans in the building will receive a Monarchs plastic cup, courtesy of State Farm.
