Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
MUSKEGON, Mich. - A tremendous first period for the Muskegon Lumberjacks vaulted the home team to a 2-0 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday night at the L.C. Walker Arena.
Trevor Hamilton and Rem Pitlick tallied in the first period in which the Lumberjacks outshot the Fighting Saints 14-5.
It took Muskegon six minutes into the first period to strike. Off of an offensive zone draw win by Laine McKay, Hamilton deked through the Dubuque defense, got a shot away, and buried his own rebound through Hunter Miska to put the Jacks up 1-0.
Pitlick pounced on a turnover at the side of the goal, and danced in front of an un-defended Fighting Saints net and stashed the puck into the vacant goal, putting Muskegon up 2-0 just five minutes later.
The shooting parade continued for the home-standing Lumberjacks, who outshot the Fighting Saints 15-8 in the second period as well. Miska, who saw shot after shot, denied Collin Adams on the rebound of a 2-on-1 break to keep it 2-0 midway through the middle frame.
Dubuque outshot Muskegon 12-4 in the third period, but fell a step short of getting the first goal to begin a rally. A late penalty to Pitlick set the stage for an opportunity to get that first goal, and with Miska out for the extra attacker, the Fighting Saints' power play came up empty, and the game ended.
It was the first shutout of the season against the Fighting Saints, and Muskegon netminder Joey Daccord's second whitewashing of the season. Both have come in consecutive games, as he shut out the Fargo Force last weekend, 1-0.
Colin Theisen and Patrick Holway led the way for Dubuque with four shots apiece.
The Fighting Saints and the Lumberjacks will face off against one another to wrap up the back-to-back set on Saturday night at 6:15 CST. Join all of the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or the USHL's streaming video provider, FASTHockey.
