Columbus Crew SC Begins Eastern Conference Championship with Sunday's First Leg

November 20, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS - Columbus Crew SC (2015 regular season: 15-11-8, 53 points) continues its Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs run by facing the New York Red Bulls (2015 regular season: 18-10-6, 60 points) in the First Leg of the Eastern Conference Championship at a sold-out MAPFRE Stadium on Sunday, November 22 at 5:00 p.m. ET. The contest is set to be nationally televised on ESPN, with Adrian Healey, Taylor Twellman and Monica Gonzalez on the call. Locally, the match can be heard on the radio in English on CD102.5 FM with Dwight Burgess and Neil Sika. Juan Valladares is set to be behind the microphone locally in Spanish for La Mega 103.1 FM. This match, the second home postseason contest for Crew SC in 2015, is set to feature half-off all beer for supporters 21-and-over through the first half and 30 percent off clothing in the Crew SC Shop.

This match is officially a sellout, and following the addition of temporary bleachers on the stage on the north side of the venue as well as standing room tickets, Crew SC will set the record for the largest-ever Black & Gold home postseason crowd in club history, which was previously 20,883 on September 22, 2001 against San Jose. This is the first-ever sellout in Columbus Crew SC home postseason history.

Like the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Eastern Conference Championship is decided over a two-legged series with aggregate scoring. Following this First Leg, Crew SC travels to a sold-out Red Bull Arena for the Second Leg on Sunday, November 29. This is set to be the third all-time postseason series meeting between these two MLS originals. The two sides met in the 2008 MLS Cup, in which Crew SC defeated the Red Bulls by a 3-1 final to win its first League title, and the 1998 Eastern Conference Semifinals, a best-of-three series swept by the Black & Gold.

Sunday's clash is the 18th all-time home postseason match in Columbus Crew SC club history. All-time, the Black & Gold are 10-6-1 in postseason matches played in Central Ohio, including a record of 7-4-1 at MAPFRE Stadium in those contests. Including the Second Leg of the 2015 Eastern Conference Semifinals against Montreal on November 8, Crew SC has scored at least two goals in each of its last six home MLS Cup Playoff matches, dating back to November 8, 2008 against Kansas City.
