Nailers at Everblades Game Day Snap Shot

November 20, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Another Wild One Goes Our Way

The Wheeling Nailers have seen their share of high scoring games in the early part of the 2015-16 season, and for the most part, they have been victorious in those scenarios. Wheeling has scored at least five goals in a game four times, netting five in the home opener against Brampton, seven on November 10th against Cincinnati, six last Friday against Reading, and six more on Wednesday in Florida. In Wednesday's tilt, the Nailers netted all six of their markers during the opening five minutes of the first and second periods, building 3-0 and 6-2 leads. The Everblades rallied twice, but never tied the score, as Wheeling held on for the 6-5 victory. John McCarron (2), Harrison Ruopp, Riley Brace, Zack Torquato, and Ty Loney were the goal scorers, while Franky Palazzese made 31 saves for his fourth straight win in net.

Scoring is Common, Allowing Them isn't

The Florida Everblades have been one of the more powerful offensive clubs in the ECHL, as Wednesday's five-goal performance brought their season total to 61 in 16 games. Florida has now lit the lamp five or more times in a game on five different occasions, but Wednesday's tilt was the first result that didn't land the Everblades in the win column. Their season-high for goals in a game is eight, which was achieved on November 10th at Atlanta. Prior to Wednesday, defense had also been one of Florida's strengths, as it had surrendered three or more goals in a game only three times, with the season-high of four taking place twice. The Everblades haven't allowed six goals since last February 4th in Elmira, and the last visiting team to bury at least six at Germain Arena was Gwinnett on January 17th.

One Typically Follows Another

In the second period of Wednesday night's victory, the Nailers scored a pair of goals in quick succession, as John McCarron's power play tally at 3:55 made the score 5-2, before Ty Loney's goal gave Wheeling a 6-2 lead just 13 seconds later. That was the shortest amount of time between goals this season for Wheeling, just barely edging the 14 seconds between snipes by Jarrett Burton and Patrick McGrath on Friday. The Nailers are starting to make a habit out of scoring back-to-back goals, as they have lit the lamp twice in less than a minute six different times in 14 games, with separations of :13, :14, :27, :34, :41, and :46. Wheeling has also answered an opposition goal within a minute twice. On Wednesday, Zack Torquato's goal to put the visitors ahead 4-2 almost came within a minute, as it took place 1:02 after a Florida marker.

Still at the Top in Both

Both the Nailers and Everblades found the back of the net while playing on the power play in Wednesday's game, as John McCarron potted Wheeling's fifth goal as part of a 1-for-6 effort, while Brant Harris connected for Florida's fifth tally as part of a 1-for-4 performance. The Everblades entered the week leading the ECHL in both power play and penalty kill percentages, racking up 17 goals on 60 chances with the man advantage, while surrendering just six opposition tallies in 68 opportunities. The Nailers have scored and allowed 11 goals on the man advantage, as their power play ranks 13th, while their penalty kill sits 23rd. Wednesday was the sixth time this season that both Wheeling and its opposition lit the lamp with at least one enemy skater in the sin bin.

Five All in Florida

Friday night marks the second of three head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Everblades this season, as well as the second of three battles scheduled to take place at Germain Arena this week. On Wednesday night, Wheeling made its return to Southwest Florida for the first time since November 12, 2011, when it was also victorious, 4-1 over the Everblades. Despite a 12-7 overall mark which favors Florida, the two long time ECHL members have split their ten games in the Sunshine State, with both clubs collecting five victories. The six goals in Wednesday's game were the most for the Nailers all-time against a Floridian opponent, which includes current league member Orlando, in addition to Jacksonville, Pensacola, and Tallahassee. Wheeling will complete its second season series of the year on Saturday, when the teams clash for the third time in a row.
