IceDogs Lose OT Heartbreaker to Top Ranked Otters

November 19, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs lost a heartbreaker Thursday night, falling in overtime to the number one ranked Erie Otters, by a score of 4-3.

The IceDogs came out looking to make their mark, against the top team in the CHL. They got off to a great start as Jordan Maletta scored his team leading 11th goal of the year, when he flew down the wing and ripped a quick snapshot past Erie goaltender Devin Williams, on the short side, just 3:03 into the contest. The Otters would tie things up near the periods end, but it was the IceDogs who dominated the frame and showed Erie they were here to play, as they outshot the visitors 12-5 in the frame.

The second period saw the Otters take an early lead putting home a quick rebound to make it 2-1, but the IceDogs were not about to back down. Brendan Perlini picked up a loose puck just above the top of the circle, and exploded a laser beam of a wrist shot past Williams' glove side, who hardly had time to move an inch. The IceDogs showed strong defensive play late in the period, killing off a four minute Erie powerplay, to keep the score all knotted up. The shots on goal favoured Erie by a count of 7-5 in the period.

The third period saw the home team fight hard and push the number one ranked Otters to the absolute brink. Mikkel Aagaard put Niagara up 3-2 with a powerplay marker, just under the halfway point of the third period. The Otters would come back to tie things up and keep things interesting. The IceDogs still would not go away however as they swarmed the Erie zone in the final minute of play, generating numerous chances to get the win, but they couldn't find the back of the net as the teams headed to OT tied 3-3. The IceDogs would outshoot the visitors 16-10 in the final period, dominating in major spurts throughout the final third of the game.

The game went to three-on-three overtime as the IceDogs guaranteed themselves a big point in the standings. Josh Ho-Sang looked to have the game on his stick when he blew by a couple of Erie players and dropped goaltender Devin Williams with a nice move. Ho-Sang put a pass right through the crease of an empty cage and the IceDogs forward just couldn't manage to get his blade on it. Erie would end up getting a breakaway in overtime to put the game away and win it 4-3. The IceDogs finished with a final shot count of 34-24 in their favour, dominating the majority of the game.

Brendan Perlini was the games' second star of the evening, scoring his ninth goal of the year and coming close to a few more on multiple chances.

The IceDogs will be in Sarnia on Saturday to take on the Sting, and Windsor on Sunday to face off against the Spitfires. Their next home game is next Thursday, November 26th, against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Tickets are still available for this and all other IceDogs' home games and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
