WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed first baseman Casey Haerther on Friday afternoon.

Haerther returns for his fourth season with the Goldeyes and is the team's first player officially signed to a contract for 2016.

Since arriving in Winnipeg in 2013, Haerther has emerged into one of the American Association's premier run producers. The West Hills, CA native hit .312 with 14 doubles and 11 home runs last summer while starting in all 99 games. Haerther was third in the league with 79 RBI, largely due to a .400 mark with runners in scoring position (130 at bats). Haerther's 217 RBI in a Goldeyes' uniform are tied for sixth in franchise history and are the most of any American Association player over the last three years. A two-time American Association All-Star (2014 and 2015), Haerther also ranks tied for fourth in the Goldeyes' record books with a .326 batting average (minimum 500 plate appearances). On the defensive side, Haerther's .995 fielding percentage paced American Association first basemen last year.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to have Casey back with the club," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Over the last three seasons, Casey has been one of the best run producers in the league, while playing outstanding defence at first base. Casey has evolved into a leader on the club, and will be a big piece in the middle of the Goldeyes' lineup for the 2016 season."

Over his first seven years of professional baseball, Haerther is a .310 career hitter who has averaged 39 doubles, 14 home runs, and 105 RBI per 162 games played. The 28-year-old Haerther was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels as a fifth round pick out of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2009. Following a three-year stint with the Bruins--in which he drove in 109 runs in 147 games--Haerther played four seasons in the Angels' system and reached the Double-A Texas League in 2012. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Haerther has finished with a batting average of .293 or higher in six of his seven pro campaigns, and earned a spring training opportunity with the Baltimore Orioles' organization after hitting .360 for the Goldeyes in 2014. Heading into this season, Haerther is 150 base hits away from 1,000 for his career, and 50 RBI short of the 500 milestone.

Notes: Haerther ranks first in RBI in the American Association the last three seasons...Josh Mazzola is second on the list with 195...Haerther has made at least one appearance as a pitcher in each of his three seasons with the Goldeyes, including three strikeouts over 2.0 innings pitched in two relief appearances last year...Haerther's older brother Cody played in the American Association for the Sioux Falls Canaries in 2009...in addition to his .400 average with runners in scoring position, Haerther was even more successful with runners and scoring position and two outs (24-for-56, .429)

The Goldeyes open the 2016 season on May 19th at Joplin. Winnipeg's 2016 home opener is scheduled for Monday, May 30th versus the Sioux Falls Canaries.
