Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have invited free agents Ty Thompson and Tim Bergin (bur-GIN) to Training Camp. The forwards will join the Knighthawks on Saturday, Nov. 21st as they open camp at noon at Total Sports Experience in East Rochester.

"I am excited. Obviously, any chance you get to play at the highest level is great," said Bergin. "It's nice that someone has noticed you and given you an opportunity."

"It's an awesome feeling. I am just really excited for this opportunity," said Thompson. "I grew up watching a lot of Rochester Knighthawks games. It feels pretty good to just have this chance to show my stuff."

The 24-year-old Thompson will attend his second National Lacrosse League Training Camp after being selected 26th overall by the New England Black Wolves in the 2014 Entry Draft. Thompson, who hails from Akwesasne, had a stellar four-year collegiate career at the University at Albany, posting 154 goals, 41 assists and 195 points. He currently ranks fourth on the school's all-time goal-scoring list. In his final two seasons with the Great Danes (2013-14), he received back-to-back Division I Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-America East honors.

After an outstanding junior season, he was drafted in the fourth round (28th overall) by the Rochester Rattlers in the Major League Lacrosse Draft. During the 2013 campaign, he achieved career highs in goals (54), assists (14) and points (68), as he finished third on the team in scoring behind his cousins, Lyle and Miles Thompson. In 2014, the trio led the Great Danes to their greatest season in school history.

"To be able to play with them was something special," said Ty. "To become ranked and take Albany to the quarterfinals was an awesome experience. I had a great time."

Ty spent this past summer playing for the Kahnawake Mohawks in the Quebec Senior "B" Lacrosse League. In five games, he registered nine goals and 13 assists. In 2014, he played with Knighthawks goalie Angus Goodleaf and was a member of the Quebec League championship team. That same year, Thompson was named to the Iroquois Nationals and won a bronze medal at the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championship.

This weekend, he will get to step onto another big stage as he competes for a spot on the Rochester Knighthawks' roster.

"It's going to be awesome," said Thompson. "Craig Point was my idol growing up. So, it's going to be pretty cool to be on the same floor as him on offense. Joe Resetarits, I played with him in college. It's just going to be fun. Playing with these good players is what makes you better. I am just really looking forward to it."

Joining Thompson at camp is 26-year-old Tim Bergin, who arrives in Rochester after an impressive career in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) and at the Senior "B" level. In 2015, he finished ninth in CLax in scoring as he ranked in the Top 10 in every offensive category. Bergin posted 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in eight games with the Durham Turfdogs. After two seasons, he now has 22 goals and 23 assists in 12 games in the Canadian pro league.

Bergin achieved similar success this year in the Quebec Senior Lacrosse League, leading the league in goals (27), assists (57) and points (84). He powered the Capital Region Axemen to a league championship and a trip to the President's Cup tournament. The Axemen placed second at the President's Cup with Bergin leading the way with 22 points (9+13) in five games.

The Kingston minor lacrosse product has been on a roll since 2012, when he broke into the Quebec League. During his rookie campaign with Montreal, he notched 53 points to finish 10th in the league in scoring. The following season, Bergin moved up to the fourth spot after a 60-point campaign with his new team, Capital Region. That season, the forward was named a First Team All-Star in the President's Cup Tournament. In 2014, he achieved career highs in goals (40), assists (61) and points (101) to capture his first scoring title.

He capped off the 2014 season with his first professional lacrosse title, capturing the Creator's Cup with the Niagara Lock Monsters. Bergin was also voted to the CLax All-Rookie team after collecting 20 points (12+8) in six games. He will use that pro experience when he comes to Rochester's Training Camp.

"I played CLax the last two winters. I feel like that gets you somewhat prepared. I had great coaches on both teams," he said. "They try to prepare you for the next level. Hopefully, it will work out."

This weekend, he will make the transition to the National Lacrosse League as he attends his first NLL Training Camp. It's a chance to take his game to the next level and play alongside some of the greatest names in the game.

"It's going to be great to go out there and play with those types of players," said Bergin. "The stuff that some of those guys do is unbelievable. I watched Dan Dawson play for Team Canada just a couple months ago, and all of a sudden I have a chance to suit up with him. It's an absolute honor."
