Hulton Likes Initial Response to "Reset"

Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The Charlottetown Islanders head coach said one of his indicators for a team's enthusiasm level is how quickly they leave the ice after practice.

"The fact that we just had to drag them all off the ice was a good sign," he said Tuesday. "It's been two pretty tough days, but they were still having fun at the end."

Hulton sent the players home with their gear following Saturday night's 3-2 loss to Acadie-Bathurst as the team reset after an inconsistent first 24 games. The players did their fitness testing Monday and the scores improved since August's training camp.

"They have been working hard, and they have the capacity to work hard, it's just a matter of being consistent with the work ethic," Hulton said.

The team has gone through lulls in spurts during games where they have not been consistent. Hulton said that is why they are a .500 hockey team, but with more consistency, the record will improve.

"The initial response has been very positive, but the proof lies in the games," he said. "I think we've gone a long way on Monday and Tuesday to win on Friday, but there's still lots of week left."

The Islanders (11-10-2-1) play Friday and Saturday at the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (11-11-3-0).

Assistant captain Oliver Cooper said the team wants to "park" Saturday's game. He said they are not where they wanted to be at this point in the season, but it is still early.

"There's no panic in our dressing room," he said. "We just wanted to reset and start carte blanche and come back fresh."

He added teams go through tough times during a season, but he likes what he sees in his teammates.

"The energy is good," he said. "The morale is still good. We're still here trying to win games."

Islanders goalie Mason McDonald is with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League all-stars playing the Russians. He is scheduled to start Thursday's game in his hometown of Halifax.
