Hawks Ring in Holiday Season

November 16, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks players hear fans ringing cowbells during every game at Young Arena; Thursday, the roles will be reversed when the Hawks serve as celebrity bell-ringers at a pair of The Salvation Army's area red kettle locations.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. November 19th, players will hold a friendly fundraising competition for The Salvation Army in front of Hy-Vee locations at College Square Mall in Cedar Falls and 2834 Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo. Look for details as to which players will be where via the team's Facebook and Twitter accounts on Tuesday. Donations will directly benefit The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls in support of the organization's $730,000 campaign goal.

In addition, contributions during the hour will be counted toward participating players' vote total for the Slumberland Furniture Fan's Choice Player of the Year Award, presented at the end of the season. Since 2006, donations from Waterloo Black Hawks fans have helped good causes through this program. Last season, Slumberland Furniture Fans Choice Player of the Year voting raised over $2,300 by the end of the season.

Fans unable to visit either Hy-Vee location Thursday will have another opportunity to find Black Hawks standing beside The Salvation Army's kettles on Tuesday, December 1st at the University Avenue and Crossroads Hy-Vee stores.

Many local Salvation Army programs are supported from funds received each winter in the organization's iconic red kettles. Last year The Salvation Army served over 3,100 Cedar Valley families, provided 70,437 free meals, sheltered 540 individuals, and supplied nearly 13,000 Christmas gifts to needy families in Black Hawk County.

The Black Hawks hosted The Salvation Army's local Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff event on November 7th during a game against the Omaha Lancers. Fans interested in learning out more about The Salvation Army's work in the Cedar Valley can find additional information at sawaterloo.org.
