Don Cherry, Johnny Bower Help Beast to Third Straight Win

The Brampton Beast are playing their best hockey of the 2015-16 ECHL season and proved it this past weekend with a road win against the Elmira Jackals on Saturday night and a big victory against the Kalamazoo Wings on Kotak Law Military Appreciation Day on Sunday afternoon at the Powerade Centre.

Sunday afternoon was particularly special for the Beast as special guests Hockey Night in Canada personality Don Cherry and Hockey Hall of Famer and World War II Veteran Johnny Bower were on hand to help send positive wishes to the military members and to the Beast.

The Beast have now won three straight games dating back to their win against the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday, November 8 and have won five of their last six games.

Scott Howes had a dominating performance, lighting the lamp twice to lead the Brampton Beast to a 4-1 victory over the Elmira Jackals at First Arena in Elmira, New York on Saturday night.

Bryan McGregor chipped in with a goal of his own and Mike Vernace added two helpers as the Beast earned their second straight victory and fourth win in their last five games.

The teams skated to a scoreless opening frame as the Beast penalty killers stood tall and killed off six minutes in penalties.

Their strong defensive opening period sparked the offense immediately as McGregor notched his second goal of the year just twelve seconds into the second period.

With Elmira's Justin Bernhardt in the box for tripping just over five minutes later, the Beast took advantage with a power play goal as Howes tipped in a point shot from Vernace at 14:43.

The Jackals' Bernhardt responded with a power play goal of his own just under a minute later but Beast starting goaltender Trevor Cann would make sure that would be the last and stopped all five Jackals shots in the third period.

Howes continued his red-hot performance and added his second goal of the game, his team-leading fifth of the season, with 1:48 remaining in the third period, dashing Elmira's hope of a comeback.

With Jackals goaltender C.J. Mott on the bench, Luke Pither added an empty net goal with just over a minute remaining to seal the win.

Cann was rock solid between the pipes and earned his third victory of the season with his 21 save performance. Mott finished the night with 26 saves for the Jackals.

The energy was electric at the Powerade Centre for Kotak Law Military Appreciation Day as Scott Howes had a four-point night to lead the Brampton Beast to a 6-3 win over the visiting Kalamazoo Wings on Sunday afternoon.

Brandon Marino added a goal and two assists and Luc Blain chipped in with a goal and an assist to help the Beast to their third straight victory and fifth win in their last six games.

Over 3,000 people crammed into the Powerade Centre to see the day's special guests, which included Nainesh Kotak of Kotak Law, David Macdonald from Wounded Warriors Canada, Hockey Hall of Famer and World War II veteran Johnny Bower and surprise special guest Don Cherry.

Howes got the Beast off to a good start with a pair of goals in the first period. He took a pass from Jeremie Blain in the high slot and ripped a hard wrist shot beyond Kalamazoo starter Joel Martin at 8:04.

Howes notched his second goal of the night just over five minutes later as he pulled off an incredible pivot move to create some space for himself near the slot and lost control of the puck, spun and recovered and beat Martin for a highlight-reel goal at 13:44.

The Beast owned the play in the first period and outshot the Wings 13-4 in the opening frame.

Kalamazoo got on the board just over two minutes into the second period as Justin Taylor netted his fourth of the year behind Beast starter Trevor Cann at 2:11.

Luc Blain restored the Beast's two-goal lead on the power play before the midway point of the second period. Blain one-timed a Howes' pass from the slot over the glove hand of Martin for his second of the year at 8:29.

Kalamazoo's Tyler Shattock got the Wings to within striking distance with his fifth goal of the year at 9:55.

Mike Vernace picked up his first goal as a member of the Beast to finish the scoring in a wild second period as he sent a laser of a wrist shot on net that beat Martin cleanly at 15:40.

Mathew Maione got his fourth of the year at 2:28 of the third period as he deflected home a soft wrist shot off the stick of Dalton Thrower from the point to give the Beast a 5-2 lead, chasing Martin from the crease. Clay Witt entered the game in relief.

The Wings' Steve McCarthy finished off a great passing play for the final Kalamazoo goal of the evening at 7:25.

The Wings were unable to clear the zone late in the final frame and their defenseman pinned the puck against the goaltender's post. Marino applied great pressure and with an innocent poke tucked the puck behind Witt at 11:47 to end the scoring.

This Week

The Beast will attempt to add to their three-game winning streak this Friday as the Toledo Walleye visit the Powerade Centre at 7:15 PM.

The club will take Saturday off before returning to action at home against the Fort Wayne Komets at 2:00 PM.
