Atlanta Dream News Release

ATLANTA- Hyper from an after-school snack and geared up in their best sneakers, students from multiple DeKalb County Schools joined the Atlanta Dream staff on Tuesday evening at a FIT clinic to learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and staying active.

"Holistic wellness and empowerment is one of our platforms, so we want to make sure the kids are physically fit, eating well, mentally healthy and that they are receiving positive feedback, " said Tiara Dungy, the Dream Manager of Corporate and Social Responsibility.

The Atlanta Dream staff made a visit to Exchange Park Recreation Center, as part of WNBA FIT platform, a comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages healthy living practices for children and families. Alongside the Atlanta Dream staff, the Dream's mascot, Star, and Kaiser Permanente joined in on the activities.

The clinic welcomed 30 students from all over DeKalb County Schools to break off into groups and rotate throughout six different stations. Each staff member was responsible for a station where the students would partake in various basketball-related activities such as speed and agility drills, shooting, passing, and dribbling. Kaiser Permanente also was assigned a station that communicated the importance of a healthy diet and getting a good night's rest.

"We try to visit places where kids are not necessarily getting all the resources they need at school, at home or in the community, so we really try to leverage our platform to these kids specifically," Dungy said. "The kids are our future fans, business, and community leaders, so it's important that they understand the values of staying active and healthy."

The WNBA partnered with Kaiser Permanente to emphasize the importance of a healthier community. Kaiser Permanente take's the role as the league's first-ever health care expert and consultant to promote health and wellness throughout the league.

"We want to implement not only physical fitness and mental fitness, but it is also about nutrition, rest and lots of water that ensures overall well-being," said Jessica Billgrad on behalf of Kaiser Permanente.

"After today I am going to start drink healthy smoothies, go to bed earlier, and workout more," said sixth grader Demetria Lind."

"This clinic provided the kids with a new experience," said De'Onna Hayes, Exchange Park Recreation Center Leader. "Many of them have never played a team sport and this shows them the fundamentals of a structured activity aside from video games or just playing outside."

The Dream will conduct additional FIT Clinics across the Atlanta metro area over the next few weeks. Those interested (must be a principal, teacher/coach or counselor) in hosting a FIT Clinic at your school or afterschool program can contact the Dream community relations department at: CommunityRelations@atlantadream.net
