Wheat Kings Down Canes

November 15, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings three game losing streak is over.

Reid Duke's shorthanded goal at the 4:51 mark of the third period snapped a 1-1 tie as the Wheat Kings beat the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-1.

A former Hurricane, Duke's goal was his eleventh of the season and came after a great play by winger Jayce Hawryluk, who was the game's third star.

The score stayed that way until the final minute when the Wheat Kings put the game away with back to back empty net goals by Tyler Coulter and Luke Harrison.

Defenceman Ivan Provorov also scored for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 12-6-0-2 and moved to within a point of the front running Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.

Egor Babenko scored in a losing cause for the Hurricanes, who were outshot 45-29.

Lethbridge netminder Jayden Sittler finished the night with 41 saves while Brandon's Jordan Papirny, who was the Manitoba Blue Cross first star, stopped 28 shots in what may have been his best game of the year.

Over 4,900 fans turned out Saturday night at Westman Place, meaning over ten thousand fans have attended the Wheat Kings last two games.

Brandon closes out a tough weekend Sunday afternoon with a 4pm game against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders, which will be a battle for top spot in the East Division.

The Raiders, who were idle on Saturday, enter Sunday's game with a record of 12-5-2-1.

Tickets to Sunday's game go back on sale Sunday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.

Sunday's game will be the third of a 5-game WHL home stand for the Wheat Kings, who will host Medicine Hat on Wednesday before playing host to the Regina Pats on Friday - in a game to be presented by Manitoba Public Insurance.
