Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux Falls, SD-Parker Tuomie's league leading 14th goal of the season at 3:11 of overtime lifted the Stampede to a 2-1 victory over the Tri-City Storm before 5, 794 fans at the PREMIER Center Saturday night. The win improved the Herd's record to 9-7-0 on the season and 7-3-0 on home ice. The Herd moved within two points of second place Omaha in the Western Conference. Daniel Warpecha tallied the Herd's lone goal in regulation while Stefanos Lekkas earned his fifth win of the season between the pipes with 28 saves.

Both teams came out with energy and both goaltenders were on top of their game to keep the game scoreless through most of the first period. The Herd grabbed the first goal o the game at 14:10 when Csanad Erdely won a face-off in the left circle and sent it back to Daniel Warpecha who one-timed it from the top of the left circle, perfectly into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Herd a 1-0 edge. They would take that lead into the locker room, outshooting Tri-City (5-7-3) 11-8.

The Stampede began the second period on the power play, but weren't able to muster much of an offensive attack and that was a theme for the entire period as neither team looked particularly good with passes off on both ends of the ice. The Storm were able to get on the board and tie the game with a power play tally at the 11 minute mark of the period. After Stefanos Lekkas poked checked away the puck, the Herd missed on a clearing attempt and Nico Sturm took advantage wristing a shot past the right shoulder of Lekkas and into the net. That would be the only goal of the period as the teams would skate into the intermission in a 1-1 tie. Tri-City outshot Sioux Falls 9-8 in the period.

Most of the third period belonged to Tri-City who outshot the Herd 11-4 in the period. Stefanos Lekkas was the story of the period as he stopped all 11 shots and kept the Stampede in the game. Tri-City nearly won the game in the final seconds of regulation when Tri-City was able to get a shot off in front of the Stampede net, but Lekkas stretched across and made a glove save to force overtime.

It was the first overtime game of the season for the Herd and their first taste of the new format in which the first four minutes are 4-on-4 and the last three minutes are 3-on-3. The Herd wouldn't let the game get to a 3-on-3 situation however as Tuomie ended it at 3:11. Collin Peters dumped the puck into the left wing corner of the Storm zone where Joe Rutkowski picked up the loose puck and sent a pass into the slot to Tuomie who quickly flipped it over the shoulder of Storm goaltender Matthew Greenfield to send all 5,794 fans at the PREMIER Center home happy.

Tri-City outshot the Herd 29-26 in the game and went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-4.

Sioux Falls and Tri-City will face each other again next weekend as the Herd travel to Kearney to face the Storm Friday and Saturday night. Friday's game is slated to start at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 7 PM. Fans can catch both games live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM or online at KELO.COM.
