Lavigne Backstops Thunder to Shootout Win

WATERLOO,Iowa - The Bloomington Thunder needed extratime to take their 3-2 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night. Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan)made 32 saves and shut down the Black Hawks in the shootout, going 7-for-7. Tarek Baker (University of Minnesota)scored the only goal of the shootout for the Thunder in the seven round skillscompetition.

Bloomington (7-5-3) picks up two more points as part of a seven game pointstreak and improves to sole ownership of second place in the EasternConference. Waterloo (6-5-2) is tied for fourth in the Western Conference withthe shootout loss, but can't extend their four game point streak.

Bloomington jumped on the Hawks to start the game. Takingnine shots in the period, the Thunder beat goaltender Cale Morris (University of Notre Dame) twice in the first eightminutes. Jeremy Davies (NortheasternUniversity) netted his second of the season on his former team to make it1-0. Skating to the corner, Davies fired the puck off the skates of thegoaltender for a power play goal and the eighth assist of the season for Brogan Rafferty (Quinnipiac University).

JakeDurflinger scored his third of the season andsecond with the Thunder moments later. The Walnut Creek, CA native to his firstshot from the near side of the net before coming around for a wrap around goal.The goal beat Morris less than two minutes later to give the Thunder a 2-0 leadthat would hold to the intermission.

The Hawks would pick up their first goal on the power playto break into the game. Michael Davies(University of Denver) rifled a shot from the point to score for Waterloowith six minutes to play in the period. Through two periods, goaltender Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan) made18 saves to keep the Thunder on top of the Black Hawks.

In the third, it was an unlikely goal that tied the game. Nick Swaney (University of Minnesota-Duluth)netted his eighth of the season as he fired the puck toward the front of thenet. It bounced of the skates of the Thunder defense and into the back of thenet to tie the game at two.

In overtime, the Thunder and Hawks traded odd man rushes onthe large sheet of ice at Young Arena. Bloomington tallied seven shots on nettrying to end the game before the shootout, but Morris came up huge for theHawks to move it to the shootout.

Seven rounds were finally decided by Baker and Lavigne forthe Thunder. Baker moved into the Hawks zone and slipped it past Morris, whohad denied the first six shooters. Lavigne, in his second straight shootoutgame, was flawless and stopped KevinCharyszyn (Air Force Academy) in the final round to take the win.

Bloomington finished the night 1-for-3 on the power playagainst the top penalty kill for the Black Hawks. Waterloo scored their firstpower play goal at home this season, going 1-for-5 in the game.

Bloomington'snext stop is in Green Bay to take on the Gamblers Saturday night. The Thunderwill play in Green Bay for the second time this season at 7 p.m. Bloomingtonheld on for a 4-3 win over the Gamblers on opening weekend also playing theBlack Hawks one night prior.
