Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves fell to their Northern rival, the North Bay Battalion 5-2 Friday night at home. Special teams were the difference as North Bay scored two powerplay goals and added a short-handed marker.
The Wolves and Battalion battled in a very close opening period. Both teams exchanged chances, but no one was able to find the scoresheet until the final minute of the frame. Newly acquired Battalion forward, Daniil Vertiy, scored on the powerplay to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Twenty seconds later, DANNY DESROCHERS notched his team leading 7th goal of the season to tie the game at one. MICHAEL PEZZETTA and DMITRY SOKOLOV picked up the assists on the goal. After the 1st, the shots were 8-7 in favour in the Battalion.
The Wolves were unable to carry over the momentum from the first period as the Battalion scored two goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play. Steve Harland scored both goals for North Bay. The Wolves did have their chances as PEZZETTA was stopped point-blank and SOKOLOV also had a couple of great chances. After 40 minutes, shots were 13-12 in favour of North Bay.
In the third, North Bay continued to apply pressure. Battalion captain Mike Amadio scored a short-handed goal to give North Bay a three goal lead early in the period. The Wolves tried to get back in it, as BRANDON BASTASIN scored his first career OHL goal. However, this was as close as the Wolves would come as North Bay added an empty net goal late in the game to make it 5-2. The final shots on goal were even at 21 a piece.
The Wolves will look to get back in the win column as they hit the road for the rest of the weekend as they make stops in Peterborough on Saturday and Mississauga on Sunday.
The Wolves will return home next Friday night, November 20th, against the Peterborough Petes at 7PM. Tickets are available at the Sudbury Arena Box Office, by calling (705)-671-3000 or online at greatersudbury.ca.
