Schwab Stops in Rapid City

(RAPID CITY, SD) - The Rapid City Rush, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Arizona Coyotes, is pleased to announce the arrival of Corey Schwab, the Goaltending Development Coach of the Arizona Coyotes. Schwab will be here this week, working one-on-one with Rush goaltenders, as well as assisting Coaches Ferras and DeSantis in practice prior to this weekend's pair of games against the defending Kelly Cup Champion Allen Americans.
"It's great to have Schwabby come in to Rapid City to work with both Marek and Danny, and give the wisdom that he has learned throughout his tremendous career both as an NHL goaltender and an NHL goaltending coach," said Rush Head Coach and GM, Joe Ferras. "This is one of the added benefits of having our affiliation. It is great for our goaltenders to have the opportunity to work with Schwabby and refine their techniques. With Schwabby having played at the ECHL level, followed by a very long and successful career in the NHL, it is easy for our goalies to relate to Schwabby's experience and learn what it takes to get to the higher levels and be successful."
Schwab became a goaltending coach following a 13-year career that spanned across the entire landscape of professional hockey in the IHL, ECHL, AHL, and NHL, and is in his first season with the Arizona Coyotes organization. A former draft pick of the New Jersey Devils (1990 Round 10-#200), 8 of his 13 seasons were spent in the top-league in pro hockey with the Devils, where he was on hand for their 2003 Stanley Cup Championship, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. One of his best professional seasons came in the 1994-95 AHL season as the net-minder for the Albany River Rats, where he was an AHL Second-Team All-Star, recorded the best GAA in the AHL at 2.59, and received the Harry Holmes Memorial Award as a member of the AHL's best goaltending tandem, all while posting a 25-10-9 record in 45 games played. Additionally, he backstopped the River Rats to an AHL Calder Cup Championship in that same season, claiming Calder Cup Playoff MVP honors in the process. Since the 2005-06 season, following the NHL lockout, Schwab has been responsible for training net-minders for the Lightning (2005-06 to 2007-08), and the San Jose Sharks organization (2008-09 to 2014-15). Prior to playing professionally, the North Battleford, Saskatchewan native spent his junior career compiling a 49-22-4 record in 95 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL.
"I've enjoyed my time in Rapid City so far. The facility is great and the coaching staff has been very accommodating. I can see why this team has had success in the past: they do things right," Corey Schwab, Goaltending Development Coach of the Arizona Coyotes stated. "I was presented with an opportunity to be a Goaltending Development Coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning after I retired, and I really enjoy the teaching aspect of the job. I thought it would be a great way to pass on my experiences from all levels of hockey. Hopefully I can teach them and help them get to the NHL and realize their goals."
With respect to the Rush goaltenders, Danny Battochio and Marek Langhamer, Schwab continued: "Danny is an experienced guy. He's very quick and athletic, and determined. I can see the determination that he has and it is an amazing asset. Marek was in training camp with the Coyotes and in Springfield and was off to a great start. He has a great attitude and work ethic which, to me, are important for guys that want to strive every day."
In his 10-plus years in his position as a goalie coach, Schwab has worked with many goaltenders such as Olympic Bronze Medalist and Stanley Cup Champion Annti Niemi, current San Jose Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock, Thomas Greiss, current Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, Antero Niitymaki, former 22nd overall draft choice Brian Boucher, and current Calgary Flames goaltender Kari Ramo.
