Tri-City Americans News Release
Vancouver, B.C.- The Tri-City Americans (6-8-1-0, 13 pts) received two goals from Parker Bowles, and goaltender Nicholas Sanders earned his first career WHL win as the Americans defeated the Vancouver Giants (4-8-2-1, 11 pts) 4-1 in front of 3,732 at Pacific Coliseum on Sunday Night.
The game started slow, with neither team getting many shots to begin the first period. Tri-City got on the board first as Vladislav Lukin made a nice move to get through the Vancouver defense and tucked the puck past the right pad of Payton Lee for a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Vancouver tied the game early in the second period, as Elliot Peterson scored his first goal in a Giant's uniform to even the score at one. Midway through the second, the Americans retook the lead as Parker Bowles skated into the Vancouver zone on a breakaway and beat the goaltender with a backhand shot. The lead increased to 3-1 for Tri-City after Bowles scored his second of the game on the power play. Vancouver had the 8-7 shot edge, but the Americans held the lead going into the third.
The Giants battled to get back into the game in the third period, but couldn't get anything going, as the Americans had a 13-6 shot advantage in the third. The Americans clinched the win late in the third as Jordan Topping lit the red lamp to help Tri-City earn the victory.
Tri-City has won two straight games and snaps a four game road losing streak.
The Americans were 1-of-4 on the power play and recorded 12 minutes in the penalty box. The Giants couldn't convert with five power play chances and spent 10 minutes in the penalty box.
Nicholas Sanders made 19 saves in the win, while Payton Lee stopped 23 shots in the loss.
Tri-City will make the drive back to Kennewick and have a day to rest before facing the defending WHL Champion Kelowna Rockets (10-5-0-0, 20 pts) this Tuesday, Nov. 3. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. at the Toyota Center. Tri-City was 1-3 against the Rockets during the regular season and were swept by Kelowna in the first round of the 2015 WHL Playoffs.
