Kingston Frontenacs News Release

Kingston - For a team with traditional roots in black and gold, Kingston Frontenacs fans will be seeing a sea of pink on the ice of Rogers K-Rock Centre this Friday when the Frontenacs take on their Eastern Division rivals the Peterborough Petes. Cataraqui Centre presents the Kingston Frontenacs' fourth annual Pink in the Rink game in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. On the heels of last year's successful event, the Frontenacs will again sport limited edition pink jerseys and socks for the game, which will be put up for online action after the game with net proceeds to be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The game will again feature a Survivor Walk, where cancer survivors and their supporters in attendance are invited to join together in a victory lap around the ice during the 2nd intermission.

"This is a very important cause for our team to get behind and raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against breast cancer," said Justin Chenier, Executive Director of Business Operations with the Kingston Frontenacs. "One in nine Canadian women will develop breast cancer, but through the great work from agencies like Canadian Cancer Society, the five year survival rate for breast cancer today is 88 percent, which is up from 73 percent in the 80s."

The Kingston Frontenacs have been selling Pink Packs for $25 through the Frontenacs Originals Store at Rogers K-Rock Centre, at Guest Services at the Cataraqui Centre, at the Canadian Cancer Society's office on Days Road, and at Centre Sports Apparel at Cataraqui Centre. Each Pink Pack includes a limited edition Pink t-shirt, ticket to Friday's game, and a $5 donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

While the Kingston Frontenacs have long supported breast cancer fundraising initiatives, this year things hit close to home in the extended Kingston Frontenacs family, in Christine Styles and Kim Campbell who will perform the ceremonial puck drop.

"Christine Styles, partner of Kingston Frontenac assistant equipment manager Kevin Walker and mother of two was diagnosed with bilateral stage three breast cancer this past March," said Chenier. "After recovering from surgery she is currently undergoing 6 months of chemotherapy which will be completed in December. Christine is a retired Canadian Forces Veteran having completed 24 years of service."

"Kim Campbell, billet mom of Spencer Watson and Konstantin Chernyuk, and mother of two was diagnosed with a highly aggressive, triple-negative invasive breast cancer in October 2014," said Chenier. "She is making a great recovery after surgery, 6 months of chemotherapy and a month of radiation treatments. Kim has lived in Kingston all her life and currently works at Ongwanada Hospital. We are honoured to have both Christine and Kim join us on the ice."

"Thanks to partner organizations like the Cataraqui Centre and Kingston Frontenacs and fundraising events like Pink in the Rink we are the largest charitable funders of cancer research in Canada," said Doug Kane, Manager of Canadian Cancer Society Kingston. "Because of this funded research survival rates for cancer have jumped significantly over the last several decades."

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national organization that aims to eradicate cancer, as well as enhance the lives of people currently living with the disease. The Society fights more than 200 different types of cancer with the ultimate vision of creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer.

"We focus our energies and our efforts on serving people with all types of cancer, funding life-saving research and advocating for cancer patients and their families across Canada," said Kane. The Society also does extensive cancer prevention work and provides support services to Ontarians living with the disease.
