Turnovers, Penalties Bite Hounds against Wolves

Soo Greyhounds News Release

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - On a night when the Soo Greyhounds were short staffed up front, turnovers and penalties were the last elements they needed to see creep in their game.

But in the end it was those two factors that put the club in a 4-1 deficit, one they wouldn't fully dig themselves out of in a loss to the Sudbury Wolves.

"The two things that stand out to me on the negative side are the turnovers and the penalties we took. In the end that's what cost us, two bad turnovers ended up in the back of the net and penalties where they scored two goals. We talked about turnovers, we talked about penalties because we're short guys, we're short bodies and we didn't need to be int he box" started Hounds Head Coach Drew Bannister when asked what stood out most to him, the mistakes or the way his club busted to get back in the game.

"But 5-on-5 for me, the positive was that we controlled the play offensively. That's the best game we have had offensively 5-on-5 generating offence. We didn't have any luck or whether their goalie played well or not, or we missed a couple open nets, hit him in the chest we have to find a way to score goals and manufacture offence" he continued.

Under three minutes into the first period a turnover to goaltender BRANDON HALVERSON's left saw Danny Desrochers skate from the corner and right in front before putting the puck over top the Hounds netminder for the 1-0 visitors lead.

The Hounds power play would tie the game on it's first opportunity, while marking it's third power play goal in the last two games.

TIM GETTINGER circled out of the corner and went back to the point where GUSTAV BOURAMMAN's shot beat Zack Bowman to tie things at one.

For Bouramman it was his 2nd goal of the season, and the second assist came from BLAKE SPEERS.

Then it was nearly ten minutes before Sudbury would score twice in a span of 1:40 to take a two goal lead.

At 18:03 a Greyhound clearing attempt was kept in at the point and worked through Michael Pezzetta and Allan Lyszczarczyk before Dmitry Sokolov made it a 2-1 game.

Sokolov came back with his 2nd goal of the night, on as many shots in the period, when a cross ice feed was finished off glove side on Halverson for the 3-1 Sudbury lead through twenty minutes.

Greyhounds forward ZACH SENYSHYN was part of two early second period chances to cut into the deficit all on one shift.

First, the Ottawa ON product was part of a 2-on-1 that saw a shot over the net and then later couldn't capitalize on a breakaway leaving the Hounds down a pair of goals.

Three minutes later BORIS KATCHOUK made a hit behind the Sudbury net to gain control before setting up GABE GUERTLER whose shot went wide.

Those three chances were a preview of the pressure the Hounds would mount later in the period.

Midway through the frame and as a two-man Sudbury advantage became a 5-on-4, the visitors notched their second power play of the game.

After Halverson made the initial save the puck came out of the Hounds net minders glove and out front to Alan Lysczcarczyk who netted his 4th of the season building the Wolves lead to 4-1.

Over the last 9:20 of the period, and especially late, the Hounds put the Wolves on their heels while keeping them shotless the rest of the frame.

JACK KOPACKA finished off a beauty give-and-go with MORGAN FROST at 14:33 to net his 5th goal of the season and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Then with just 43 seconds left int he second period ZACH SENYSHYN found the back of the net, firing from the side of the goal for his 9th of the season as the Hounds climbed within a goal of the Wolves.

All-in-all, the Hounds outshot the Wolves 18-10 in the period and outscored them 2-to-1, but still trailed 4-3.

"We were starting to use more of the depth of the ice and getting them spread out and running around, and we were finally getting pucks through to the net. Some of our guys started moving their feet down low and beating guys to the net. We created changes, we had a lot of quality scoring chances but in the end the score is all that matters" said Bannister when asked about the last ten minutes of the second period.

"It's a 4-3 game that we can't have back but we have to build. I thought we were a better hockey team than we were on Saturday. Saturday we win, tonight we lose" he continued.

The third period started with a play just around a minute in that had many shaking their heads in wonder. When many believed the puck was on the back of the Wolves net, possession ended up out in neutral territory and Matt Schamlz took advantage going in on a breakaway on HALVERSON who poke checked the puck away and denied the Sudbury forward.

Then with 8:30 to go, HALVERSON put his left pad tight to the post turning aside a wrap-around attempt and leaving the deficit at a single goal.

The Hounds outshot Sudbury 11-6 in the period, and 41-22 overall but couldn't move any closer before dropping the first game with their Northern Rivals by the 4-3 final.

The loss puts the Hounds record at 5-6-0-2, good for 12 points heading into Friday Night.

"I've said all along it's the way we lose that matters and I thought tonight was a better effort from our kids, we did a lot of positives but we have to make adjustments and the guys have to manage the puck a lot better when we have full possession and we have to stay out of the penalty box when we are in a position when we are short on forwards and we're having guys play minutes" concluded Bannister.
