Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
EDMONTON, ALTA. - In celebration of the Western Hockey League's 50th anniversary, the Edmonton Oil Kings announced Thursday that the team will be hosting a WHL Reunion Game on Family Day, Monday, Feb. 15 against the Tri-City Americans.
The Oil Kings are offering two free tickets to any alumnus who played even a shift for any team in the WHL, WCHL or CMJHL since its inception in 1966. Additional tickets will be offered to alumni at a discounted $10 rate.
"We wanted to celebrate not just the history of the Oil Kings, but the place Edmonton holds in the history of the Western Hockey League," said Oil Kings director, business operations Kevin Radomski. "The Oil Kings were one of the founding members of this league, and since then there have been three different Oil Kings franchises through here, as well as the Edmonton Ice.
"Beyond that, Edmonton Minor Hockey and other associations in the area have produced countless players who have gone on to play throughout the WHL, and hundreds more have used their WHL scholarships to attend the University of Alberta, Grant McEwan and NAIT. We wanted to celebrate all of these players, and make this game a true WHL reunion."
Alumni will be featured in a photo on the ice after the game and then feted with food and drink in a post-game reception.
"You're going to see former teammates you haven't seen for years, opponents you loved and opponents you loved to hate," Radomski said. "You're going to be able to share stories about the fans in Flin Flon or the bus ride to Brandon or what it was like wearing Cooperalls. It's going to be a chance for the extended WHL family to come together and recognize all that makes our league truly special."
Attending alumni are encouraged to wear their old team colours at the game and for the photo, whether they be New Westminster Bruins, Billings Bighorns, Moose Jaw Canucks or any other frnachise. The Oil Kings will be in on the action on the ice that night, wearing special throwback jerseys reminiscent of those they wore in the early '70s.
WHL alumni won't want to miss this historic event! Registration is open now at www.oilkings.ca.
