MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mississippi RiverKings mascot, RiverThing, participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness community walk on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

RiverThing greeted walkers before the 12th annual walk began, interacted with the kids and received recognition during the pre-walk ceremony. RiverThing then helped lead the walk with WMC-TV's Joe Birch. 652 people participated in the walk, which raised funds to ensure the Chapter has resources to fund educational, support, and awareness activities that will benefit individuals all over the greater Memphis area.

In addition to participating in the walk, the RiverKings will continue to show support for AFSP when AFSP is the MVP Non-Profit organization at the RiverKings game on Saturday, March 19. Fundraising tickets sold for that game will benefit the Memphis/Mid-South AFSP chapter.

"The RiverKings have been a great partner to the Memphis/Mid-South Chapter for a number of years, helping us reach our annual fundraising goals and allowing us a platform for awareness activities in our community," says Carol Andrew, Memphis-MidSouth AFSP Chapter Board member. "The Walk provided an opportunity for us to reinforce that partnership to the families we support, and we are grateful that "Thing" and RiverKings officials came to the Walk to meet the attendees. We could not implement programs and events in the greater Memphis area without the support of wonderful corporate sponsors - and the Mississippi RiverKings are definitely at the top of that list!"

The Memphis/Mid-South AFSP chapter is currently working on an initiative with schools in the area to provide training resources to counselors and faculty to assist them in identifying at-risk students. This year's walk has raised just under $38,000.00, and funds will continue to come in until Dec. 31 from the 63 teams who participated in this year's walk. Not all walkers were members of a team, but much of the donations come from team captains who challenge their friends and family to donate to AFSP in memory of a family member they have lost to suicide.

The Mississippi RiverKings are proud to be the longest, continually operating sports franchise in the Memphis area, as they begin their 24th season in 2015. Ticket packages for the 24th season of RiverKings hockey start at just $24.75 by calling 662-342-1755. The RiverKings are back home against the Peoria Rivermen on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
