Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings (0-1-0) opened their 24th season of hockey with a 2-0 loss to the Louisiana IceGators (1-0-0) Friday night at the Landers Center.

The game featured a matchup of former RiverKings teammates in goal, with Peter Di Salvo starting for the RiverKings and Adam Courchaine starting for the IceGators. In a scoreless first period, those two stole the show, combining to stop 24 shots, including 17 saves for Courchaine.

It was much of the same in the second period, as the goalies stopped 23 shots together. Di Salvo made 13 saves in the second period to keep it 0-0 heading into the third period.

In the third, Louisiana opened the scoring just 1:58 into the period when Blake Hietala took advantage of a RiverKings defensive zone turnover. Geordie Wudrick took the puck away and found Hietala, who beat Di Salvo for a 1-0 IceGators lead. Later in the period Louisiana made it 2-0 when Jake Hauswirth snapped a shot directly off a faceoff at the left circle. Di Salvo got a piece of the shot, but the puck rolled up off his arm and trickled over the goal line to give the IceGators a 2-0 lead at 7:23.

The RiverKings didn't threatened much from there, generating just four shots in the third against Courchaine, who made 31 saves for his first shutout in the SPHL. Di Salvo made 33 saves on 35 shots in the loss.

The Mississippi RiverKings are proud to be the longest, continually operating sports franchise in the Memphis area, as they begin their 24th season in 2015. Ticket packages for the 24th season of RiverKings hockey start at just $24.75 by calling 662-342-1755. The RiverKings are back home against the Peoria Rivermen on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
