Komets Sweep Wings Opening Weekend

Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets successfully opened the season (season four in the ECHL and 64th season overall) with a pair of wins against the Kalamazoo Wings and completed week one of 2015-16 with a 2-0-0 record and four points.

It's the second straight season Fort Wayne has opened with a pair of wins by taking the season opener on the road and claiming victory in their home opener the following night.

Friday at Kalamazoo five different Komets scored in a 5-3 win. Alex Belzile, Garrett Thompson, Mike Embach, Shawn Szydlowski and Trevor Cheek each tallied their first goals of the year. Thompson added two assists for a three-point night in his ECHL debut. It was also Cheek's first appearance in the ECHL. Pat Nagle posted his second straight season opening win in the Fort Wayne net stopping 34 of 37 Kalamazoo shots.

This is the 38th season the Komets have been in a league with Kalamazoo but Friday's game marked the first time Fort Wayne has skated a season opener at Kalamazoo.

Saturday the Komets returned home and turned back the Wings 3-1 in front of a home-opener crowd of 8,881. Peter Sivak scored his first goal of the year while Cheek recorded his second. With the Komets up 2-1 Szydlowski sealed the Fort Wayne win with his second goal of the season. Sivak, Cheek and Szydlowski along with Brett Daniels and Embach had points in each of the two games played to open the season.

Early leaders-- Daniels leads with four assists and four points.....Szydlowski and Cheek lead with two goals apiece.....Daniels and Jordon Southorn lead with +4.....Will Weber leads with nine penalty minutes.

Special K's-- The Komets special teams completed the opening weekend at a 25% power play rating (2/8) and 80% penalty kill rating (8/10).

The week ahead-- The Komets will host intrastate rival Indy for back-to-back home games this Friday and Saturday. Both teams were unbeaten (2-0-0) opening weekend and are tied at the top of the Western Conference and Midwest Division with four points heading into the second week. The Fuel opened the season with a 3-2 shootout win over Toledo in the home opener at Indianapolis Friday and followed with a 3-1 win at Evansville Saturday. The Komets and Fuel are idle this week until they meet Friday. It will be the first and second meetings of 11 slated for this season. Last year the Komets faced Indy 11 times in the Fuel's ECHL debut and claimed the season series 8-1-2. Friday's game will be Fort Wayne's 276th regular season meeting against an Indianapolis team. The Komets are 169-81-20-5 all-time in the rival against Indy.

Save with your Marathon Fill-Up Card at the game this Friday, Oct. 23 when the Komets host the Indy Fuel at 8pm.

Soundoff With The Komets continues this year on 21Alive in Fort Wayne. The 30-minute live telecast is hosted by Tommy Schoegler from SportOne/Parkview IceHouse each Monday night at 7:30 throughout the season. Tonight's guest will be Komet play-by-play announcer Bob Chase. Tonight's show will actually air from the Field House.
