Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (1-3) earned their first win of the season, picking up a 5-0 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs (3-3) Friday at the Moda Center.
Hawks goaltender Adin Hill registered his first shutout of the season, and third of his career, by stopping all 23 shots the Chiefs took.
Portland struck first, 4:25 into the game, when theybv caught Spokane on a line change. With the Chiefs scrambling, Rodrigo Abols took a feed from Alex Schoenborn and dropped a touch pass to Paul Bittner, who fired a shot past Spokane netminder Tyson Verhelst for a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks struck again at 14:40 when Keegan Iverson stepped out of the penalty box right into a 2-on-1 with Abols. When Verhelst stopped Abols's shot, Iverson banged in the rebound for a 2-0 lead they took into the second.
After a scoreless second, the Hawks extended the lead at 8:44 of the third when Schoenborn brought the puck into the Spokane zone on a 2-on-1, kept it and wired it past Verhelst from the left faceoff circle for a 3-0 lead. Just over two minutes later with the Hawks on a power play, Abols crashed the crease and banged in a rebound to make it a 4-0 lead.
With 33.4 seconds to go, rookie Cody Glass scored on a power play to make it 5-0, which stood as the final. It was the first career goal for Glass.
Abols and Schoenborn each finished with three points, with both players registering a goal and two assists. Bittner and Evan Weinger each had two points.
The Hawks were 2-4 on the power play and a perfect 5-5 on the penalty kill. They're back in action Sunday when they take on the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Moda Center at 5 p.m.
