Stingrays Fall to Greenville in Preseason Opener, 5-0
October 9, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-Tayler Thompson scored twice in the second period to lead the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 5-0 preseason win over the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night at the Carolina Ice Palace.
Thompson's pair of goals came in a span of just over three minutes early in the game's middle frame. With Greenville already up 1-0 on a Paul Rodrigues goal, Thompson converted on a wrist shot from the slot at 2:26 to give Greenville a 2-0 lead. After a South Carolina turnover, Davis Vandane fed Thompson with a pass, and the forward's wrist shot beat South Carolina goaltender Mark Denakich over the blocker.
At 5:26, Thompson scored again on a redirect. Devin Gannon's pass hit Thompson's lower body and rolled past Dekanich's right pad to extend Greenville's lead to 3-0.
The Swamp Rabbits would add a pair of goals in the third period with Andrew Dommett scoring at 1:39, and Gannon adding a late goal at the 18:25 mark to give Greenville the decisive 5-0 victory. Greenville goaltenders P.J. Musico and Alex Vazzano earned a combined shut out. Musico stopped nine shots to earn the victory, and Vazzano denied all 11 Stingrays tries in relief.
The Swamp Rabbits outshot the Stingrays, 24-20.
Following regulation, the both teams played in a trial run of the 3-on-3 overtime session that the ECHL has implemented this year. Season Ticket Holders who packed the Carolina Ice Palace left happy as the Stingrays struck at the 2:29 mark of the extra session. Austin Fyten scored off a rebound, knocking the loose puck past an outstretched Vazzano from the right-side of the crease.
The Stingrays return to preseason action tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. when the Atlanta Gladiators visit the Carolina Ice Palace. The game is free, but due to limited seating, only open to Season Ticket Holders. Fans may pick up their Season Tickets at tomorrow's game.
