2015 Louisville Bats Final Game Notes

October 5, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

THAT'S A WRAP: LOU finished 2015 with a 64-80 record. The season extended the longest streak of consecutive losing seasons in LOU franchise history from three to four. The Bats have not made the postseason since 2010 when they went 79-64, winning the division by 0.5 game. LOU's lone Governors' Cup Championship came in 2001 when they finished 84-60, winning the division by 16.5 games. In the postseason they went on to defeat NOR in five games, 3-2, and defeated SWB for the IL Championship in an abbreviated one-game series because of the 9/11 attacks.

NEW SKIPPER: 13-year Major League veteran Delino DeShields managed his first season with the Bats in 2015, his sixth overall season as a manager in the Reds' minor league system. DeShields became LOU's 18th manager in franchise history since 1982, and their fourth in five years.

MARY E. BARNEY TEAM MVP: C Ramón Cabrera was named the Louisville Bats' 2015 Mary E. Barney Most Valuable Player. Of all Bats with at least 80 games played, Cabrera finished tops among them with a .290 average and was 3rd on the team in H (92), 4th in 2B (14) and 4th in RBI (35). His .290avg was also the best by any LOU catcher who appeared in at least 70g since C Ryan Hanigan batted .324 over 75g with LOU in 2008. Cabrera's 748.2 innings caught for LOU is also more than double any other LOU catcher. He hit .320 (32-for-100) after the All-Star break with 9 2B, 14rbi and 8r. He hit .324 (47-for-145) with runners on base with 8 2b and 33rbi. Cabrera's contract was selected by CIN on 9/1 and he made his MLB debut as a PH on 9/5. He earned his first ML start 9/6 vs. MIL and hit his first home run, a solo shot, 9/11 vs. STL. Previous award winners include OF Jason Bourgeois (2014), RHP J.J. Hoover (2012), C Devin Mesoraco (2011), IF Zack Cozart (2010) and IF Joey Votto (2007).

NO-NO IN TOLEDO: LHP Tony Cingrani (4.0ip), LHP David Holmberg (3.0ip) and RHP Sam LeCure (2.0ip) combined to throw the LOU franchise's first nine-inning no-hitter 7/12 at TOL, beating the Mud Hens 5-0. Cingrani started for LOU on ML rehab and worked 4.0ip and allowed 3bb with 5k. Holmberg relieved Cingrani and walked the first batter he faced before retiring the next nine in order and LeCure worked two perfect frames with 4k to close the game. Prior to 7/12, LOU had thrown just one no-hitter in its history since 1982, a seven-inning complete-game no-hitter by RHP Larry Luebbers in the first game of a doubleheader 5/14/00 at CHA. Additionally, 8/26 at IND RHP Michael Lorenzen (W, 8.0ip, 1h) and RHP Drew Hayes (SV, 1.0ip, 0h) combined for a one-hitter in a 3-0 LOU win.

BATS IN THE BIGS: A total of 27 different players appeared for both LOU and CIN in 2015, not including ML rehabbers RHP Homer Bailey, OF Jason Bourgeois, C Devin Mesoraco and LHP Manny Parra. CIN purchased the contracts of 11 LOU players throughout the season: RHP Nate Adcock, RHP Dylan Axelrod, RHP Collin Balester, C Ramón Cabrera, IF Iván De Jesus, RHP Donovan Hand, OF Ryan LaMarre, RHP Sam LeCure, RHP Michael Lorenzen, RHP Jon Moscot and RHP Josh Smith. Aside from the 11 contract purchases, 16 other players appeared for both CIN and LOU: C Tucker Barnhart, OF Brennan Boesch, LHP Tony Cingrani, RHP Carlos Contreras, RHP Jumbo Díaz, OF Chris Dominguez, OF Adam Duvall, LHP Brandon Finnegan, LHP David Holmberg, RHP Raisel Iglesias, LHP John Lamb, IF Kristopher Negrón, RHP Keyvius Sampson, IF Eugenio Suárez, OF Kyle Waldrop, and RHP Pedro Villarreal. Two more, OF Yorman Rodríguez and C Kyle Skipworth, were with CIN for short stints, but did not appear in a game. Boesch, Cingrani and Iglesias each appeared for LOU on both an option and on ML rehab. Cabrera, Iglesias, LaMarre, Lamb, Lorenzen, Moscot, Sampson, Smith and Waldrop all made their ML debuts with the Reds in 2015.

ALL-STAR IRVING: IF Irving Falú was LOU's lone representative in the Triple-A All-Star game in Omaha on 7/15. Falú batted .309 (87-for-282) with 15 2b, 4 3b, 2hr, 34rbi and 42r in 74g before the All-Star break. Falú was 6th among qualifying batters in average entering the All-Star break. He finished 2015 leading LOU in R (42), SB (14), 2b (15), 3b (4), OBP (.375), OPS (.787) and T-1st with 23 multi-hit games. He went 0-for-1 as a substitute in the All-Star game. No LOU player was named an IL Postseason All-Star for the second consecutive season.

WEEKLY HONORS: OF Yorman Rodríguez was named IL Batter of the Week for the week of 6/22-6/28. He was the only Batter of the Week for LOU in 2015 and LOU's first since IF Cody Puckett in 2012 (6/18-6/24). Rodríguez hit .444 over the seven-day span and led the IL with 12h and 12rbi. Rodríguez produced three different three-hit games in the week, including a five-RBI performance in LOU?'s 15-2 win 6/25 at SWB and a 4rbi effort in 6/26's 11-5 win at LHV. RHP Robert Stephenson was named IL Pitcher of the Week for 7/27-8/2 and was LOU's only Pitcher of the Week award winner in 2015. Entering the week of 7/27 with only four career Triple-A starts, Stephenson allowed just 1er in 14.0ip over two outings and led the IL with 15k. In his first outing of the week 7/28 at CHA, he shutout CHA for 8.0ip while allowing just 3h and 1bb. He fanned 10 in the 3-1 victory, earning his fourth Triple-A win in as many decisions. He then allowed just 1er on 3h and 2bb with 5k over 6.0ip in a no-decision 8/2 vs. TOL to close the week.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSIONS: On 6/25, LOU tied a club record with 24h in a 15-2 win at SWB. LOU's 24h were a season high for any IL team and tied LOU's club record set on 5/3/10 at BUF. LOU's 15r 6/25 at SWB were the most LOU scored in a game in 2015 and the most since scoring a club-record 22r 7/13/12 vs. GWN. LOU's seven-run 3rd inning on 6/25 tied for the most runs scored in an inning by LOU in 2015 (also scored 7r in the 3rd inning 5/9 vs. ROC). LOU then followed its season-high 15r-24h performance on 6/25 with an 11r-19h performance 6/26 at LHV. LOU's 11r and 19h on 6/26 were both the second-most in a game in 2015. LOU had 45h combined between the games on 6/25 and 6/26 and had just 46h combined in the previous 6g leading up 6/25. (LOU had just 40h through their first seven games of 2015.) Over the 2g, LOU raised its team average from .257 to .265. It was also the only time LOU had scored more than 10r in consecutive games in 2015, and first time since 6/17/14 and 6/18/14 when LOU beat DUR 10-5 and 12-8. LOU eclipsed the 10r mark just four times in 2015. The 26r over 6/25 and 6/26 was the most LOU has scored in consecutive games since 7/13/12 and 7/14/12 when they scored a club-record 22r vs. GWN on 7/13/12 and then 10r vs. GWN the next day.

LIGHTS OUT LORENZEN: Among hurlers with at least 40.0ip, RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-2, 1.88) led all LOU pitchers with a 1.88era. He was also one of just two LOU pitchers to throw a nine-inning CG SHO in 2015 (Lorenzen 8/16 vs. NOR [9.0ip, 4h, 0r, 1k, 1bb] and RHP Matt Buschmann 8/1 vs. TOL [9.0ip, 4h, 0r, 4k, 0bb]). Lorenzen also had two of the five best game scores by LOU pitchers in 2015, and was the only pitcher to do so.

GRAND FINALES: OF Brennan Boesch drove in the tying and go-ahead runs for LOU with a one out double in the bottom of the 9th on 9/7 vs. IND. With that win, LOU has now recorded walk-off wins each of the past three season finales on Labor Day, all against IND. On 9/1/14 with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, OF Jason Bourgeois shot an RBI single down the right-field line to give the Bats a 4-3 win. On 9/2/13 with two outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Bats down 5-3, OF Denis Phipps launched a walk-off grand slam off IF Matt Hague, who entered as a pinch hitter for the pitcher, but remained in the lineup and on the mound despite it being a save situation. The slam capped a five-run 9th and gave LOU a 7-5 win.

THE LOUISVILLE SLUGGER: CIN signed University of Louisville product IF Chris Dominguez to a minor league contract on 2/11/15. Dominguez was born in Los Angeles, but grew up in Miami before attending UofL and moving to the city full-time. He batted .223 with 9hr, 19 2b, 32r and 36rbi in 96g with LOU. He made the Reds' Opening Day roster, but went 0-for-3 with 3k in three PH appearances before being optioned to LOU 4/14. CIN recalled Dominguez on 6/11 and that day he homered in the Reds' 6-3 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Dominguez would go 6-for-20 (.300) with 3rbi and 2r in his second stint with the Reds before being optioned on 6/29. He hit .283 in July, but was designated for assignment on 7/26 and cleared waivers two days later before finishing the season with the Bats.

DUVALL'S HOME RUN CHASE: OF Adam Duvall, a Louisville native and another former player at the University of Louisville, was traded to CIN on 7/31 as part of a package sending RHP Mike Leake to San Francisco. (Duvall, in fact, hit his first career HR off Leake in his ML debut against the Reds at AT&T Park on 6/26/14.) At the time of his departure from Sacramento on 7/31, he led the PCL in HR (26) and total bases (218) while ranking among the league leaders in RBI (2nd, 80) and extra-base hits (2nd, 53). Duvall homered three times in his first five games with LOU (4hr with LOU overall) and led all of Triple-A with 30hr. He also finished in a three-way tie for 5th place in the race for the Joe Bauman Home Run Award (HR leader in all of MiLB). UK product and current Astros farmhand A.J. Reed (Lancaster/Corpus Christi) led all of MiLB with 34hr. Duvall hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit, two-run homer in his first at-bat with the Reds 8/31 at CHC in a 13-6 win.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE ATTENDEES: RHP Layne Somsen will be the lone Bat in the 2015 Arizona Fall League. Somsen appeared in 15g (3gs) for LOU in 2015 and posted a 2.73era (9er in 29.2ip). Somsen was one of seven players from the Reds organization, and one of four Reds pitchers, selected to play in the AZL. He is slated to be joined by fellow Reds farmhands RHP Stephen Johnson (PEN), RHP Nick Travieso (Daytona), RHP Zack Weiss (PEN), C Chad Wallach (Daytona), IF Alex Blandino (PEN) and OF Phillip Ervin (PEN). The Reds representatives will join farmhands from ATL, BAL, SD and SEA on the Peoria Javelinas. AZL play begins on 10/12 and runs through 11/21.

ROYAL FLUSH: CIN acquired LHP John Lamb and LHP Brandon Finnegan from KC in a July trade deadline deal for former Bat RHP Johnny Cueto. Lamb, a PCL All-Star while with Omaha in the Royals organization, made just three starts for LOU, going 1-1, before he was recalled by CIN. In two August starts (8/3 at NOR and 8/8 at DUR), he allowed just 2er on 8h and 4bb in 12.0ip, striking out 13. He made his ML debut for CIN 8/14 at LAD, but suffered the loss after allowing 5er in 6.0ip, despite striking out 7. Finnegan made eight starts for the Bats (0-3, 6.23, 30.1ip, 30k) before being recalled on 9/8. He made two scoreless relief appearances for CIN on 9/11 and 9/13, both vs. STL, before earning his first career ML start 9/18 at MIL. He allowed just 1er over 5.0ip with 4k to earn the win as the Reds defeated the Brewers 5-3. Also in the trade with KC, CIN acquired LHP Cody Reed, who went 6-2 with a 2.17era in 8gs w/ PEN with 60k to just 16bb.

FUTURES GAME: OF Yorman Rodríguez, OF Kyle Waldrop and LHP Amir Garrett (Daytona) each participated in the 2015 MLB Futures Game at GABP on 7/12. Rodríguez went 0-for-4 with 2k for the World. Waldrop went 1-for-4 with 1r for the U.S. Garrett allowed 1er in 1.0ip on 3h with 1k, but took the win.

THE NICK OF TIME: In 2015, RHP Nick Christiani passed Brian Shackelford for sole possession of first place on the Bats' all-time career pitching appearances list. Christiani made his record-setting 178th career appearance for LOU on 6/17 vs. GWN and allowed 1er in 1.2ip (4h, 0bb, 0k). Shackelford previously held the record at 177. Christiani made 22app and worked 31.1ip with a 5.74era for LOU in 2015 and posted a 7.71era over 4.2ip with PEN in 2015. Christiani is 13-15 with a 4.55era (113er, 223.2ip) across five seasons with LOU, and is 0-1 with a 4.76era in 13 career games with the Reds in 2013 and 2014. He was transferred to PEN on 7/3 and appeared in 4g before finishing the season on their DL.

MO' MONEY, MO' MOSCOT: RHP Jon Moscot earned the win in his first six decisions (7gs) with LOU in 2015 before suffering his first loss 5/25 vs. TOL (8er, 4.2ip). Not including that game, Moscot went 7-0 in 8gs with a 1.99era (11er, 49.2ip) with the Bats. His contract was purchased by CIN on 6/5 and he made his ML debut that night vs. SD (L, 5.0ip, 4h, 4er, 3bb, 3k). He would earn his first ML win in his second start 6/10 vs. PHI, allowing 2er over 6.0ip. Moscot's season, however, was cut short following a dislocated shoulder he suffered while diving to attempt to tag a baserunner 6/15 at DET.

STEPHENSON ON THE SCENE: RHP Robert Stephenson entered 2015 listed as CIN's top prospect by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. The righty went 4-7 with a 3.68era and .197avg-against in 14gs with PEN, striking out 89 in 78.1ip. He was promoted to LOU on 7/3 and debuted that night vs. COL. He earned the win after lasting 5.0ip (4h, 2er, 3bb, 6k), despite sitting through a 56-minute rain delay after throwing just four pitches, as LOU went on to beat COL 3-2 in a 7-inning game following the completion of a suspended game. Stephenson started his Triple-A career 4-0 and struck out 36 batters in 36.0 innings in his first six starts (7/3-8/2), all of which were at home. He allowed just 9er in that span, 6er coming in a no-decision 7/16 vs. SWB, and posted a 2.25era. The span also included an outing of 8.0 shutout innings 7/28 vs. CHA when he allowed just 3h and 1bb with 10k as the Bats won 3-1. The 85 game score he posted that game was the highest by a LOU starter in 2015. In his final five starts of the season, however, he went 0-4 with a 7.32era as he worked into the 5th inning just once.

JUMBO COMES UP BIG: RHP Jumbo Díaz posted a 6.65era for the Reds in 25app through 6/6 before being optioned to LOU on 6/7. He blew the save and surrendered 2er in his first appearance with the Bats 6/8 at COL, then subsequently made 12 straight scoreless appearances spanning 15.0ip. He converted his final eight save opportunities with LOU and, in total, struck out 12 hitters to just 4bb in 16.0ip.

LeCURE IN LE VILLE: After four full seasons with the Reds, RHP Sam LeCure was designated for assignment out of spring training and outrighted to LOU where he spent most of 2015 with the Bats. He posted a 5.25era in 60.0ip with 44k to 24bb. He was 3rd on the team with 41app out of the pen and converted one of his two save chances. He allowed just 1er in 10.0ip with 6k and 0bb over his final 6app (8/2-8/17) before CIN purchased his contract on 8/19. LeCure pitched two perfect innings out of the pen with 2k in his 2015 Reds debut 8/19 vs. KC. He tossed 5.2ip over 4app before allowing a run for CIN.

STONE COLD BUMMER: OF Steve Selsky hit .317 with 2hr and and 29rbi over 51g in what was to be his first full season at Triple-A. His campaign was halted, however, with a left meniscus injury in late June. He was 5th in the IL in batting at the completion of his last game 6/19 at ROC. The Bats were 33-35 at the time of his injury and went just 31-45 the rest of the way.

HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL: Just four LOU players remained on the roster for the duration of the 2015 campaign. IF Jermaine Curtis, RHP Jose De La Torre, IF Irving Falú, and OF Steve Selsky were the only four players who spent the entire 2015 campaign with LOU. However, of those four, De La Torre and Falú were the only players who did not spend time on the DL, and De La Torre was the only player who was on LOU's active roster for every game in 2015. Curtis was on the DL from 7/29 through end of 2015 with a left thumb sprain and Selsky made two trips to the DL, 5/8-5/18 with a right hamstring strain, and 6/21 through the end of the season with a left knee meniscus injury. Falú's only absence from LOU's active roster was when he was temporarily inactive from 5/20-5/23.

RUNNING FOR THE ROSES: LOU went 17-12 in May, tallying nine more wins than they did in April (8-13). The nine-win improvement was LOU's largest month-to-month improvement since June to July of 2010 when the team had a 10-win improvement (12-16 in June 2010, to 22-6 in July 2010). During May, OF Yorman Rodríguez was T-3rd in the IL in XBH (13) and T-6th in TB (50). IF Eugenio Suárez was T-6th in the IL in OPS (.886), T-7th in BB (16) and T-8th in SLG (.404). RHP Jon Moscot was T-1st in W (4) and 5th in IP (37.2). LHP David Holmberg was T-4th in the IL in ER (4) and 6th in ERA (1.98) among pitchers with +30.0ip, and was T-7th in IP (36.1).

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: LOU played 93 games against teams with a record better than .500 at the time of their meeting. The 93 games were the highest total since Reds affiliation began in 2000. The previous high was 76 games in 2006. LOU went 38-55 in those games and went 40-58 against teams that finished 2015 with a winning record.

THE UNLIKELY ARM: IF Hernán Iribarren made two pitching appearances in 2015 and was the only LOU position player to take the mound. He worked a perfect inning 7/20 at COL and allowed 1er on 3h and 1bb with 1k in 2.0ip 9/1 at TOL. In 2014, he made 6app and worked 5.0ip, allowing just 1h, 1bb and 1hbp (0r, 0k). Prior to 2014, Iribarren had never made a pitching appearance. The 1er he allowed at TOL was the first run he had allowed in his career in 8app.

POWER OUTAGE: LOU hit 66hr in 2015, the lowest total since the 1990 Redbirds hit just 54hr. 48 of LOU's 66hr were solo HR (73%). For the first time in franchise history in 2015, no LOU player recorded multiple home runs in a game. Chris Dominguez' grand slam 4/18 vs. IND was the only slam on the season for LOU. LOU last hit just one slam in 2011 (Danny Dorn, 6/5/11 at COL). The Bats smashed seven slams in 2012 and then three in both 2013 and 2014.

OFFENSIVELY LOW HIGHS: Chris Dominguez led LOU with 19 2b, the lowest total for the team 2b leader in franchise history. The previous low team leader was 23 2b by Casey Parsons in 1985. Yorman Rodríguez led LOU with 10hr, matching the lowest total for the team leader in HR in franchise history (both Parsons and Gary Rajsich in 1985). Irving Falú led LOU with 43rbi, the lowest total for the team RBI leader in franchise history (previous low leader was 56rbi by Jack Ayer in 1985).

FRANCHISE LOWS: LOU set a new franchise low for runs scored in a season in 2015 with 506r. LOU's 506r was the lowest mark in the IL and 8r shy of LOU's previous franchise-worst of 514r scored in 1991. LOU scored fewer than 600r for the fourth consecutive season after scoring at least 600r every season from 1997-2011. LOU also set a new franchise low in RBI with 459 in 2015. LOU's 459rbi were the fewest in the IL and 4rbi shy of LOU's previous season-worst mark, 463rbi, set in 1988 when LOU also had a franchise-low 51hr. LOU narrowly avoided setting a new franchise low for doubles in a season with 204 2b in 2015, two more than the franchise-worst 202 2b in 1990.

THEFT ALERT: LOU caught just two of the last 27 attempted base stealers to finish the season, and finished 2015 with the third-worst caught-stealing percentage in the IL at 21.1% (LHV led the IL, catching 36.9% of potential base stealers). LOU had 147 steals attempted against (T-5th most in the IL) and allowed 116sb (3rd most in the IL). LOU catchers' 31cs were also the third-fewest in the IL (BUF and ROC both had 30cs).

STRUGGLING STARTERS: RHP Michael Lorenzen went 2-1 with a 1.13era (3er in 24.0ip) and worked an average of 8.0ip per start in August. However, over the final five weeks LHP Jon Lamb (8/8 at DUR) was the only other LOU starter to earn a win besides Lorenzen. The last win by a starter who was with LOU on the final day of the season came from RHP Robert Stephenson 7/28 vs. CHA. Not including Lorenzen, LOU starters went 3-16 with a 4.67era (82er, 158.0ip) from 8/1 to 9/7 and averaged just over 4.2ip per start over the 33g span. Meanwhile, LOU relievers went 6-8 and posted a 3.22era (50er, 139.2ip) from 8/1 to 9/7.

WILD WILD WEST: LOU went 28-39 (.418) vs. the IL West in 2015 and had the second-worst divisional record of any IL team (PAW, 36-55, .396). LOU was outscored 277-218 and outhit 578-550 against the IL West. Of LOU's 67g vs. the IL West, 45g were decided by 3r or fewer, 35g by 2r or fewer and 28g by 1r. LOU went 14-14 in one-run games vs. the IL West, but just 8-14 in games vs. the IL West decided by 4r or more. LOU's 28 wins vs. the IL West matched its 2014 total.

NORTHERN LIGHTS: LOU went 21-19 vs. the IL North in 2015, the only division LOU had a winning record against. LOU was outscored, however, 180-174 and outhit 380-370 by IL North opponents. Of LOU's 40g vs. the IL North, 21g were decided by 3r or fewer, 16g by 2r or fewer and 9g by 1r. LOU went 4-5 in one-run games vs. the IL North and went 9-10 in games vs. the IL North decided by 4r or more.

SEA SICK: LOU went just 5-17 (.227) vs. the IL Champion Columbus Clippers in 2015, the worst season-series record vs. COL in franchise history (minimum 5g). LOU went 4-7 vs. COL at LSF, but finished 1-10 at Huntington Park in 2015. LOU is now just 23-50 (.315) all-time at Huntington Park. LOU lost the first 5g at COL in 2015 and was outscored 76-43 and outhit 131-110 in the 11g at Huntington Park in 2015. LOU's 1-10 record at COL in 2015 is a new worst single-season mark at COL (previous was 1-7, .125 in 2004 and 2006).

BONUS BASEBALL: LOU played into extra innings 14 times in 2015 and went 7-7. LOU played two more extra inning games in 2015 than they did in 2014, but fell one win shy of 2014's extra-inning win total (8-4). LOU went 3-2 in extra-inning home games and never lost an extra inning game by more than 1r, but won two extra-inning games by 3r and one by 2r. LOU's .500 mark in extras was 8th in the IL.

SCORELESS INNING STREAK: LOU sustained a franchise-worst 32-inning scoreless streak from the 8th inning 8/8 at DUR to the 4th inning 8/13 vs. COL. The 32-inning streak surpassed a 31-inning mark set by the Redbirds in 1995. The streak began after scoring 2r in the top of the 7th in a 3-1 win at DUR on 8/8. DUR then shutout LOU 9-0 on 8/9 at DUR before LOU returned to LSF and was shutout by COL 3-0 on 8/11 and 2-0 on 8/12. LOU snapped the streak when C Ramón Cabrera singled home OF Adam Duvall in the 4th inning 8/13 vs. COL. During the streak, LOU batters went 15-for-106 (.142) with 1 2b, 7bb and 31k.

ROAD WOES: LOU went 30-42 on the road in 2015. After going 23-24 on the road before the All-Star break, LOU went just 7-18 after the All-Star break. LOU finished 11g under .500 on the road, marking LOU's worst road record since going 22-50 on the road in 2012. LOU went 35-37 on the road in both 2014 and 2013, but has not had a winning record on the road since 2010 when LOU finished the season 36-35 away from LSF.
