Mississauga Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - It was a first at the Hershey Centre Sunday afternoon as the Flint Firebirds made their maiden voyage to Mississauga to take on the Steelheads. Formerly the Plymouth Whalers, Sunday's game was the first glimpse of the news Flint franchise. The Steelheads hoped to bounce back after a hard fought 3-1 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday night.
With the ice still wet, it would be the Steelheads who jumped out to the hot start. Just 44 seconds into the game, Alex Nylander beat Firebirds netminder Kyle Keyser short side to put the home team up 1-0. Assists on Nylander's third goal of the season went to Everett Clark and Damian Bourne. The two teams traded power plays in the first with neither able to capitalize. The period ended with the Steelheads ahead 1-0. Shots on goal after the first were 11-6 in favour of Flint.
Much like the latter half of the first, the second was very tightly checked as both teams traded chances. Steelheads goalie Jack Flinn stood tall, turning away a number of shots early on to keep the Steelheads ahead. Not to be out done, the Steelheads were able to create a number of good scoring chances of their own. After a scramble in front, the Firebirds were finally able to solve Flinn as Bryce Yetman scored his first of the season, sliding one past Flinn. Assists on the goal went to Vili Saarijärvi and Jacob Collins. That would be the only goal of the period as the two teams heading into the second intermission tied at 2. Shots on goal after two were 22-19 in favour of Flint.
Throughout the third period, this was a game that looked destined to head the distance into an overtime period as neither team was able to beat the opposing goalie. However, with time winding down on the third Zach Grzelewski on Flint walked out of the corner and was able to beat Flinn five hole with just 44 seconds left on the clock to put Flint up 2-1. Assists on the goal went to Will Bitten and Connor Chatham. With time running out, the Steelheads had one final chance to send the game into to overtime, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Mississauga will visit the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday before returning home to host the Kitchener Rangers on October 11th for a Thanksgiving Sunday matinee.
