Madison Capitols News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Madison Capitols (0-2-0) got the game's opening goal at the 4:10 mark, but the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (3-0-0) answered with the game's final five goals to take a 5-1 victory on Saturday at The Stable in Cedar Rapids.

The Capitols looked to quiet the Stable crowd early on, potting the game's opening goal for a second straight contest. After Simon Butala coughed up the puck in his defensive zone, Ryan Lohin stole the disc and skated to the right circle, beating Ryan Larkin on the blocker side to make it 1-0 at 4:10 of the first.

After giving up the game's first goal, however, Mark Carlson's RoughRider squad went to the offensive. After scoring 13 goals in their first two games, the Riders picked up right where they left off, picking up a power play just past the six-minute mark. On the ensuing advantage, Matt Gosiewski located the puck in a sea of traffic near the blue paint and beat Garrett Metcalf to tie the game at 6:30.

Just less than a minute later, at 7:17, on another Cedar Rapids power play, Hugh McGing sneaked behind the Madison defense, took a home run pass from Mitch Reinke, and beat Metcalf over the shoulder to put the Riders ahead 2-1.

The offense was unrelenting, and Cedar Rapids quickly got a third marker to go ahead 3-1 off the stick of Ross Colton at 8:36. Colton raced down the left wing side and roofed a shot on Metcalf's short side. Following the tally, Ryan Edquist entered the Madison net for his first action of the 2015-16 year.

The Lakeville, Minn. native was busy shortly after entering the game, stopping ten straight shots to conclude the first period. Cedar Rapids outshot Madison 17-6 overall in the opening period.

In a second period that saw two power plays for each side, Madison was able to stabilize and keep the red-hot RoughRider power play quiet, but the Capitols also fared unsuccessfully on the man advantage. Cedar Rapids finished the night 2-for-5 with the power play.

Matt Filipe picked up the lone second period tally at even strength for Cedar Rapids, picking up a puck behind Edquist's net and wrapping it home at the right post to make it a 4-1 score at 4:26 of the middle stanza. The teams could only muster a combined 14 shots in the period despite the four power play opportunities.

The Capitols' deficit provided to be too much to overcome, as the RoughRiders added one more insurance marker courtesy of Luke Morgan at 3:03 of the final period. Edquist was strong in relief for Madison, making 23 saves on 25 shots in his second USHL game.
