Tigers Comeback to Defeat Blades 3-2
October 3, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers headed out on their first overnight road trip of the season, kicking things off in Saskatoon against the hometown Blades. The two teams hadn't met since the finale of the Medicine Hat Arena over 6 months ago. Both teams earned splits in their home and home matchups to start the season last weekend.
The first period was a tight checking one, as both teams played to just feel each other out. Medicine Hat dressed 4 rookies in the lineup and welcomed the return of Matt Bradley, who made his season debut after being held out of preseason with a tumor in his nose.
The Blades got out to a quick start just 8 minutes into the game as Nikita Soshnin rattled one past Tigers netminder Nick Schneider on the power play to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Just before the end of the opening frame Ryan Graham buried his 2nd of the season to finish the stanza 2-0 Blades.
The midde frame saw the line of Matt Bradley, Chad Butcher and Mason Shaw come to life as they had chance after chance on the Blades goaltender Brock Hamm. The line was successful just past the midway point as Butcher would pot his first of the season as he was found wide open by Bradley on the side of net to cut into the lead 2-1 heading into the intermission. Schneider also was playing well stopping all 9 shots in the period.
Medicine Hat had a few comeback games last season and they would have to do the same in the final 20 minutes to pick up their first victory on the road this season. The Tabbies would strike early as Mason Shaw picked up a pass from rookie Max Gerlach and fired one home to tie the game at 2 just two minutes in. Rookie James Hamblin had a great third period with scoring chances early. The Edmonton native is still looking for his first WHL point and came close potting his first goal but just slid the puck wide both times.
With the game tied, the teams headed into overtime, the first for the Tigers and had to kill off a Steven Owre penalty to start the extra frame. Owre would redeem himself of the penalty by taking a cross ice pass from Cole Sanford and streaked down the wing potting a back hand past Hamm for the game winner.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
1. CHAD BUTCHER - MH - 1G
2. BROCK HAMM - SASK - 35 SAVES
3. STEVEN OWRE - MH - 1G, GWG
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow night against the Prince Albert Raiders. The next home game for the Tigers will be Tuesday October 6th, 2015 against the defending WHL Champion Kelowna Rockets, tickets can be purchased online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 1-855-985-5000.
