DeBrincat Scores Five in Otters Win

Erie Otters News Release

Niagara, Ontario - While the Erie Otters played spoiler for another opposing team's home opener in the team's 6-1 win at the Niagara Ice Dogs, the biggest headline of the night was the individual production of Alex DeBrincat, who scored five goals in a record-setting performance.

DeBrincat would get the scoring started halfway through the first period when he buried a shot in on an open net thanks to some nice give-and-go passing from Darren and Taylor Raddysh. Erie had the 16-9 advantage in shots on goal but the Ice Dogs would get one back before the end of the period. Johnny Corneil got one past Devin Williams to tie the game at 1.

Shaun Bily and Brendan Perlini would have matching minor penalties to begin the second period four-on-four for both teams. That would prove to be in the Otters favor. Erie appeared to score a goal just half a minute into the period, but no goal was initially called. After the officials reviewed the play, they determined DeBrincat scored his second of the game putting Erie ahead 2-1.

Goal number three for DeBrincat would come less than a minute later, putting the Otters up 3-1. DeBrincat now has two hat tricks in his Otters career, the first coming on November 7, 2014 against Sarnia. The Otters' second period onslaught would continue as Jake Marchment blasted one past Brent Moran to tally Erie's third goal in less than five minutes, extending the Otter lead to three goals.  DeBrincat wasn't finished as he scored his fourth of the night and fifth of the season at 9:19. Erie would go into the second intermission with the 5-1 lead.

In the third period, DeBrincat would become the first Otter to score five goals in a single regular season game. His fifth of the game would put Erie up 6-1 with 10:10 left to play. The last Otter to have a five-goal game was Connor McDavid on April 10, 2015. His five goals propelled the Otters to a 7-3 win in last year's OHL playoffs against the London Knights.

Erie will travel home to Erie to host its home opener on Saturday, October 3. The game against the Flint Firebirds is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
