Owen Sound Attack News Release

A pair of undefeated teams took to the ice in Owen Sound on Wednesday Sept. 30.

The Owen Sound Attack and Flint Firebirds both entered the day looking to improve to three-and-oh on the season, but only one team would.

And as it just so happened, the Owen Sound's 5-2 victory helped them tie best start through three games in franchise history.

While it took the Attack over 64 minutes to score in their last outing, the home side got on the board rather quickly on Wednesday night.

With just 4:50 gone in the opening frame, Justin Brack drove hard to the net and banged home a loose puck to give Owen Sound a 1-0 advantage. For Brack, it was his first point of the year, while Nick Suzuki picked up his 3rd with an assist on the play. Jarett Meyer also helped out on the play.

The Attack weren't content with one quick goal though.

With just over sixty seconds having passed, Owen Sound's Jonah Gadjovich made it a 2-0 Attack advantage with a wicked backhander.

Gadjovich's first of the season came on a helper from Tyler MacArthur and forced the visitors to take their timeout.

The Firebirds appeared to settle down out of the timeout, but it wasn't enough to take all of the wind out of Owen Sound's sails.

With 6:08 to play in the first, Ethan Szypula wired a snapshot over the top of Zack Bowman's shoulder to give the Attack a 3-0 lead. Szypula's goal, which was helped out by Jaden Lindo and Josh Sterk, chased Bowman from the game and brought in Flint's backup goalie Kyle Keyser.

Attack netminder Michael McNiven was just as good as the team's offence was in the first period. He continued his shutout streak by turning aside all nine shots that Flint directed towards him during the game's opening 20 minutes and helped Owen Sound to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Owen Sound would add another just before the halfway mark of the middle stanza.

Nick Suzuki continued his excellent play to start the season by picing his 2nd goal of the year, while Josh Sterk and Santino Centorame set up the rookie's rebound goal.

The Firebirds would answer back though, and with 4:57 left in the period, Flint ended McNiven's bid for a 2nd straight shutout on a broken play. Zach Grzelewski would get credit for the goal, scoring on a broken play that saw the puck pop loose just to the side of the Attack net.

Even though Flint was able to get on the board, Owen Sound maintained their three goal lead through 40 minutes of play, and looked to grab their 3rd straight win when the final frame commenced.

Flint wasn't willing to go easily though, and it was Zach Grzelewski who cut the lead to just two goals when he scored his 2nd of the game at 8:09 of the 3rd. Owen Sound was on a Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kill when the goal found the back of the net.

Owen Sound would respond, and they did it in a big way, scoring on a powerplay of their own

Rangy defenceman Jarett Meyer scored his first career Ontario Hockey League goal, going five hole on Flint's Keyser. Meyer's goal, which put the Attack up 5-2, came with 9:02 left in the game and was assisted on by Petrus Palmu and Markus Phillips.

Meyer's goal would be the final tally of the game, as the home side held on to continue their perfect early record.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 43-32 for Owen Sound, and Owen Sound netminder Michael McNiven turned aside 30 in his winning effort.

Attack forward Nick Suzuki was named the game's Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star while Jacob Friend earned 2nd star honours. Flint's Zach Grzelewski was named the game's 3rd star.

Jarett Meyer was named the game's Hatten Home Hardware Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game.

The Attack are back in action when they host former assistant coach Drew Bannister and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Tickets for Saturday's game, which is a 7:30pm puck drop, can be purchased at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
