Prince George Downs Silvertips 5-1

September 28, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Jesse Gabrielle scored twice on the power play and the Prince George Cougars earned the first four goals to skate past the Everett Silvertips (1-1-0-0, 2 points), 5-1 before a crowd of 2,290 at CN Centre on Sunday.

The Cougars blew open a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes with three goals in the second period, and the Silvertips managed a goal by Matt Fonteyne to spoil Mack Shields' shutout bid. Both teams managed a split of the two games, ending the Silvertips' only trip of the season to Prince George.

Carter Hart, coming off a season-opening 27-save shutout, looked sharp early but the Silvertips fell behind on Colby McAuley's rebound goal, with 2:28 left in the first period after Sam Ruopp got a point shot through traffic.

Jordan Ross' first goal of the season lifted the Cougars to a 2-0 edge at 8:37 after the Silvertips turned the puck over on an outlet pass to the blueline, and Haydn Hopkins found Ross alone at the net. Gabrielle's first goal boosted Prince George ahead, 3-0 at 13:44 and Chase Witala, last season's Cougars leading goal-scorer, got behind the Silvertips defense and fooled Hart on a backhand deke with 3:36 left for a 4-0 lead.

Hart was replaced by Mario Petit in the third period and the Silvertips responded with strong shifts early, capped by Fonteyne's goal between the hash marks on a pass to his tape by Cole MacDonald at 4:05. But Gabrielle's second goal lifted Prince George back to a four-goal cushion on a deflection at the base of the right circle, set up by Jansen Harkins' cross-ice set up at 8:46.

Shields earned the win with 25 saves.
