Mississauga Steelheads News Release

Sudbury, ON - Coming off an impressive 7-0 win over the Ottawa 67s on Friday, the Mississauga Steelheads looked to carry that momentum into Sunday's game as they visited the Sudbury Wolves. The Wolves came into today's game looking for their first win as they opened the season with a tough 8-1 loss to the Niagara IceDogs on Friday.

Jack Flinn made his second start in goal for Mississauga since joining the Steelheads prior to their home opener on Friday. Troy Timpano got the start for the Wolves. On their second power play opportunity of the period, Michael McLeod came close to giving the Steelheads a 1-0 lead, but Timpano robbed him with a pad save. Jacob Harris had a good chance on the power play for the Wolves, but Flinn was there to make the save and keep things scoreless as the game returned to even strength. Mississauga had some impressive puck movement late in the first, before getting their fourth power play opportunity of the period as Sudbury took a too many men penalty. Unfortunately a bad bounce set the Wolves off on a 3 on 0, and they made no mistake as Michael Pezzetta gave Sudbury a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Damian Bourne would get the Steelheads on the board early in the second as he crashed the net and potted his first of the season. The Wolves would have a 5-on-3 opportunity as Everett Clark and Sean Day took back-to-back penalties, but that was short lived as Patrick Murphy took a high-sticking penalty shortly after. Mississauga's penalty killers were effective, making it difficult for the Wolves to get out of their own zone as they successfully killed off the 5-on-3 to keep the game tied at 1-1. Coming out of the box, Everett Clark was in the right place at the right time as he gave the Steelheads their first lead of the game at 6:01 of the second. Alexander Nylander drew the assist on Clark's first of the season. Charley Graaskamp capitalized on a 2-0 with just under two minutes to go in the frame to tie things up at 2-2 after forty.

Sudbury came out strong in the third as Jacob Harris flew through the neutral zone, feeding Matt Schmalz, and finishing off a rebound to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead. Riding that momentum, Pezzetta netted his second of the game from Kyle Capobianco to give Sudbury a 4-2 lead early in the third. Mississauga would finally capitalize on the man-advantage as Alexander Nylander potted his first of the season to bring the Steelheads back within one. Michael McLeod and Stefan LeBlanc drew the assists on Nylander's goal. With Sudbury having some trouble staying out of the penalty box, the Steelheads would capitalize again as Nathan Bastian scored his third of the season to even things up and send the game into 3-on-3 sudden death overtime.

It was an intense extra five-minutes, with a number of great chances on both ends but a shootout would be necessary to solve this one. Pavel Jenys would shoot first for Sudbury but he was unable to find the back of the net. Up first for Mississauga was Swedish import, Daniel Muzito-Bagenda, who was also able to score. Dmitry Sokolov, Sudbury's second shooter, would get the only goal of the shootout to give the Wolves a 5-4 win. The Steelheads will take on the Peterborough Petes on Thursday before returning home to host the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday at the Hershey Centre.
