Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers embarked on a new era Saturday evening as they took on their division rivals from down Highway 3 the Lethbridge Hurricanes. It was a back half of a home and home to start the 15-16 campaign with the Hurricanes winning their home opener just 24 hours prior.

The Tigers fed off the 5947 fans in attendance for the game, with the building electric it was a rookie who stole the spotlight as Max Gerlach scored the first ever goal in the Canalta Centre just 6 minutes into the opening frame. Gerlach received a great pass from Chad Butcher and fired the puck home into the yawning cage to open the scoring. "It was a great feeling to get the first one, especially the first goal in the new building, I'm just thrilled," said Gerlach with a beaming smile.

The Tigers needed just 37 seconds to open the led to 2 as it looked to Gerlach again with his second of the night, the goal was credited to Mark Rassell however. Moments later David Quenneville was the benefactor of a sweet pass from Ty Stanton back door on the power play stretching the lead to 3-0. The Tabbies weren't done there as Cole Sanford showed off his 50 goal wrister and blew one past Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.

The only goal of the second period was by the Hurricanes as Tyler Wong found the back of the net to pot his 3rd of season and cut into the Tigers lead. Many newcomers had great games, including hometown boy Connor Clouston who brought a physical and defensive presence on this night, delivered numerous large body checks and key shot blocks.

The final frame saw 3 goals scored as the Hurricanes made a late push. The visitors scored two goals in the final 2 minutes of play as both Brayden Burke and Egor Babenko found the scoresheet.

Tigers goaltender Nick Schneider had a good game for the Tabbies despite giving up the two late goals. Schneider allowed 3 goals on 30 shots but was dependable during the Tigers penalty kills to help them when needed.
