Urbandale, IA - Austin Alger and Nathan Krusko each scored while Zackarias Skog stopped 28 shots as the Omaha Lancers picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers in front of 2,258 fans inside Buccaneer Arena on Saturday night.

After no scoring in the opening period, it took just 1:15 into the second frame for the Lancers to tally the game's first goal. Brannon McManus raced into the offensive zone to retrieve a loose puck to the left of the net. As he took possession, Austin Alger raced to the front of the crease, took the pass from McManus, and beat Buccaneers' goaltender Nick MacNab for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead over Des Moines. The lone assist on Alger's first of the year was given to McManus on the pass.

Just over three minutes later Nathan Krusko scored for the second time of the weekend to put the Lancers up 2-0 over the Buccaneers at their home opener. Nick Rivera worked with the puck in the offensive zone below the goal line and hit Krusko with a pass in the left wing circle. Krusko then with the back hand, lifted the puck by Nick MacNab for a 2-0 lead at the 4:29 mark of the middle period. Nick Rivera was credited with the only assists, his first of the year, on Krusko's second goal on the season.

A power play helped Des Moines pull back into the game and decrease their deficit to a single goal. While Matt Meier sat in the penalty box, Patrick Grasso fired a shot from the top of the offensive zone circle that beat goaltender Zackarias Skog with just 3:19 left in the second period. It was Grasso's first goal on the year with assists from Georgy Gorodetsky and Brendan Demler.

In the end, Omaha held the puck in the offensive zone to prevent Des Moines from pulling their goaltender until less than a minute remaining to hang on for the 2-1 victory. Zackarias Skog denied 28 of the 29 shots he faced in his first USHL victory of his career. With the win, Omaha moved to 1-1-0 on the young season.

The Omaha Lancers play next weekend on the road as well beginning Friday night in Lincoln to face the Stars. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and fans can listen live beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Valpak Pregame Show on "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, Mighty 1290 KOIL Mobile APP, www.mighty1290koil.com, and FASTHockey.com.
