Club de Foot Montreal News Release

MONTREAL - Two superb goals by striker Didier Drogba in the game's first 11 minutes was enough to lead the Montreal Impact to a 2-0 shutout victory over D.C. United on Saturday night. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 20,801, the fourth in its last five games at Stade Saputo and established a new MLS club record six-game unbeaten streak.

"We had a good performance tonight against another good team," said head coach Mauro Biello. "Our confidence will continue to grow, but we still have some work to do as we have a number of important games coming up. I'm proud of the way the guys played tonight."

"I thing we did well tonight to ensure that we didn't allow a goal," said Drogba. "It's true that the forward's job is to score goals, but the job the guys did behind me to defend, without that scoring goals doesn't amount to anything. The team continues to progress and entertain the fans."

The Ivorian legend took only four minutes to open the scoring. Lining up for a free kick from about 25 yards out, Drogba curled it around the inside of the wall and banged it off the short side post for a highlight reel set piece goal.

The former Chelsea-man found a second in the 11th minute when he dribbled from the centre circle all the way to the 18-yard-box. He juked the defender and chipped D.C. keeper Bill Hamid for the brace, his seventh goal since joining the Bleu-blanc-noir.

"It was an all-around team effort to keep the clean sheet tonight," explained Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush, who made three stops to tie the club record with his 10th victory at home this season. "We got the early goal and that makes it easier for us to keep our lines compact. We are now going to Orlando with a lot of confidence."

After a bit of a lull to end the first half, the Impact rediscovered its offence in the second, creating a few good scoring chances. Drogba fired another strike from distance that just missed in the 60th minute, followed by a cheeky lob from Venegas in the 74th minute that was just pushed over the bar by Hamid.

The two then almost hooked up in the 81st minute when Drogba sent a chip pass across the box to the Costa Rican, but his header went just over the bar.

The Impact will embark on a four-game series on the road, starting next Saturday against Orlando City SC at 7:30pm at the Citrus Bowl (TVA Sports, CJAD 800). The Impact will play its final home game of the season on Sunday, October 25 at 5pm in a derby against Toronto FC.
