September 24, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release

Will Bruin scored his 11th goal of the season and the Houston Dynamo survived a red card for a vital 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Dynamo (38 points, four games remaining) are now three points behind the Portland Timbers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Houston is also tied with Real Salt Lake (38 points, five games remaining) for eighth place and two points back of the San Jose Earthquakes (40 points, four games remaining) entering the weekend.

Houston completes the two-game home stand against the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.

After a lackluster first half between the rivals, the game came to life in the second half and the Dynamo finally broke through in the 67 minute. DaMarcus Beasley and Brad Davis worked a wonderful move on the left edge of the box, with Davis deftly passing in front of Beasley, who patiently drove to the end line before squaring a pass to the top of the six-yard box, and Bruin finished inside the far post from four yards.

The goal followed a series of chances for the Dynamo, beginning seven minutes after halftime when Ricardo Clark fed Giles Barnes on the right, who crossed to Davis, who then laid it back for Clark and the Dynamo midfielder forced a save from defender Kevin Ellis near the post.

Houston's next warning shot came in the 62nd minute as a clever back heel from Leonel Miranda sprung Clark on the left flank and the veteran drove to the end line before feeding Barnes at the top of the six-yard box, but his shot was saved by Tim Melia.

The home crowd was still celebrating Bruin's goal when Boniek Garcia was issued his second yellow card of the night after he raised his arm to shield Dom Dwyer near the corner and referee Sorin Stoica ejected the Honduras international.

It was Garcia's first red card in 103 career games in all competitions with the Dynamo. It was also Houston's fourth red card in four games against Sporting KC this season, with one in each.

The Dynamo managed the remainder of the game well despite the disadvantage, with Sporting KC creating a few half-chances over the final 20 minutes.

Goalkeeper Tyler Deric made three saves for his seventh shutout of the season.
