Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT- September 19, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (30-38, 56-82) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (26-43, 68-71) 5-2 in the third of a four game series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday night. The Bluefish win their 32nd game overall on the season in front of the home faithful in the Park City.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson (7-3) picked up the win with seven strong innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned run) on four hits, striking out five while not walking a batter. The southpaw from Ventura, California notched his fifth quality start, third most on the Bluefish staff. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Tim Sexton picked up a no-decision, lasting just three innings, giving up two runs on two hits, walking one and striking out three. The right hander left the ballgame early after taking a line drive off of his side in an at bat against Bryan Sabatella in the third inning. Sexton came out for his warm up tosses in the fourth but had to be removed from the ballgame in the process. Jake Hale (9-5), making his first appearance out of the bullpen, was tagged with the loss, tossing three innings, surrendering three runs (two earned runs) on four hits, walking two, and striking out one. All-Star Patrick Mincey pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his team leading 26th save.

Bridgeport got on the board in the home half of the first inning off Sexton on a two run double by CJ Retherford, plating Sabatella and Josh Prince to give the 'Fish an early 2-0 lead. Southern Maryland would answer back with a pair of runs in the top of the third off Carson on a sacrifice fly by Casey Stevenson, scoring Antone DeJesus, and a base knock by Zach Wilson that brought in Fred Lewis who came home on an error by Josh Prince, and just like that the game was deadlocked at two.

The Bluefish would regain a two run edge in the fourth against Hale. Retherford and Andres Rodriguez began the rally with back to back singles. After a Wilson Batista sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Juan Martinez drove both of them home with a blooper down the right field line, and Bridgeport was back on top 4-2. The 'Fish would add an insurance run in the fifth as Prince crossed the plate on a throwing error by Blue Crabs right fielder Fred Lewis, and the home team increased the lead to 5-2. Carson would finish the night strong, retiring 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. Mincey shut the door in the ninth striking out former Bluefish Jovan Rosa to end the contest and send the 'Fish fans home with smiles on their faces. Mincey is now tied for third in the Atlantic League in saves with Ryan Kussmaul of the Long Island Ducks. Retherford and Andres Rodriguez led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with a pair of hits each.
