Stingrays Add Toughness and NHL Experience with Signing of Trevor Gillies

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), have agreed to terms with forward Trevor Gillies, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today.

Gillies, 36, brings toughness and NHL experience to South Carolina. The veteran has appeared in 57 career NHL games, accumulating 261 penalty minutes. After making his NHL debut with Anaheim during the 2005-2006 season, Gillies spent parts of three years with the New York Islanders from 2009-2012.

During the 2010-2011 season, Gillies skated in 39 games for the Islanders, scoring two goals and adding 165 penalty minutes. That season, the 6-foot-3, 231-pound Gillies fought several NHL heavyweights including Shawn Thornton, Jared Boll, Paul Bissonnette and the late Derek Boogaard.

The Cambridge, Ontario native spent last season with the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League (AHL), scoring one goal and adding 45 penalty minutes in 20 games.

No stranger to the ECHL, Gillies began his professional hockey career with the Mississippi Sea Wolves in 1999. He also spent time with former ECHL clubs in Greensboro, Augusta, Richmond and Peoria during his career. Most recently, Gillies appeared in five games for the Orlando Solar Bears during the 2013-2014 campaign. He has skated in 122 career ECHL games.
