Phoenix Mercury News Release
PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury is adding Valley kids from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Arizona to the Mercury family as part of the team's pursuit of a second-straight WNBA Championship. To tipoff the playoff-long community outreach initiative, the Mercury and Arizona Lottery will host 30 children for a fun-filled event on Wednesday, September 16 from 5 - 7 p.m. at US Airways Center.
As a part of the special night, the children and their advocates will enjoy a pizza party, $50 shopping spree in the Mercury Team Shop, and a dance clinic taught by members of the Mercury Hip Hop Squad. Attendees will also enjoy the opportunity to shoot baskets on the Mercury's home court, as well as other fun activities including a Velcro wall and sign-making station.
"To a CASA volunteer these children are not statistics, but have names, personalities and unimaginable challenges every day", said Robin Pearson, Executive Director for Voices for CASA Children. "CASAs give a voice to children who need safe and loving homes".
As benefactors of the program, hundreds of children and their CASA advocates will receive complimentary tickets to attend each Mercury home game throughout the 2015 Playoff run. During each game, an advocate will be recognized as the team's "Captain of the Game" prior to tip-off, and a CASA alumnus will present the game ball. CASA children will also be included in fan tunnels and the ball exchange, where children will receive an autographed basketball from a Mercury player.
"Last year we partnered with Be The Match to help raise awareness of the need for bone marrow donors, and this year we want to do whatever we can to help CASA with its mission to help kids here in Arizona," said Vince Kozar, Mercury Vice President of Operations. "One of the pillars of our organization is giving back to the community that supports us, something we have in common with the Arizona Lottery. Together we will provide a sports experience these kids might not otherwise receive, and we will raise awareness on the need for more volunteers to join this wonderful local program that provides a voice for the voiceless."
"The Arizona Lottery is honored to partner with the Phoenix Mercury and host a fun-filled event for CASA Children," said Tony Bouie, Executive Director of the Arizona Lottery. "Each fiscal year, CASA receives 30% of the Lottery's Unclaimed Prize Fund to continue to provide a voice for abused and neglected children in the court system."
