RiverKings to Retire Landmesser's 55

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings, the longest continually operating professional sports franchise in the greater Memphis area, are proud to announce that they will officially retire former captain and current Head Coach Derek Landmesser's number 55 jersey in a pregame ceremony on Saturday, November 6.

"My family and I are extremely honored," said Landmesser. "With all of the history the RiverKings have here in the Mid-South it will be very special."

Landmesser has been a staple of the Memphis sports landscape since joining the then Memphis RiverKings organization in 2000. In his first season with the RiverKings, Landmesser was named the CHL's Defenseman of the Year after posting 48 points (7g, 41a) to go with a plus-59 rating. After a one-year hiatus from the organization in 2001-02, Landmesser returned to win the Ray Miron President's Cup with the RiverKings in 2002-03, assisting on the overtime, game-winning, cup-clinching goal in the finals.

Landmesser played 10 seasons with the RiverKings and he was selected to three CHL All-Star teams (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07). He holds several RiverKings franchise records, including most points in a single season by a defenseman (81, 2005-06), season plus/minus (plus-59, 2000-01), career regular season games played (624), career assists (462), career penalty minutes (953), and career points by a defenseman (563).

"'Mess' has been a true ambassador of the RiverKings organization to the community as a player and now as Coach," said Director of Business Operations David Schmoll. "He is a true Mid-South sports legend and, with the official retirement of his jersey, he will be a part of the RiverKings family forever."

When the RiverKings moved to the SPHL before the 2011-12 season, Landmesser announced his retirement to take over as Head Coach. In four seasons as the team's 13th Head Coach, he has compiled a 113-94-17 record, placing him just 15 wins shy of matching Doug Shedden for the most wins in franchise history. In 2014-15, Landmesser guided the team to its first appearance in the finals since winning the President's Cup in 2002-03.

The Mississippi RiverKings are proud to be the longest, continually operating sports franchise in the Memphis area, as they begin their 24th season in 2015.
