Revs Tread Water, Outlast Crabs in Saturday Slugfest

After a late night on Friday, completing a suspended game from August before the regularly scheduled game, the bats for both the York Revolution and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs were wide awake on Saturday evening. The Revolution outlasted the homestanding Crabs in a 9-6 victory however, and in the process improved to 35-26 in the second half. For York it equals their high-water mark for the half at nine games over .500 for the third time, all within the past week.

The Revolution jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, on a mammoth solo homer to left field by Telvin Nash, his ninth of the season. If Nash hits a 10th, it will mark the third season in Revs history they've had six players finish the year with double-digit totals in home runs. (Perez 15, Pounds 13, Boggs 12, Patterson 10, Ferdinand 10.) Impressive considering Nash and Ferdinand were not with York until June. The Revs trail only Lancaster on the team home run list as the 2015 season winds down.

Southern Maryland pulled in front in the third, when newly-acquired Reggie Abercrombie stroked a two-run homer to left with two out, scoring Zach Wilson after a two-out single. Abercrombie joined the Blue Crabs last week after playing the entire Can-Am League season with the Sussex County (NJ) Miners, and joined the first-half winning SOMD club for the stretch-run and playoffs. Abercrombie has three Major League seasons on his resume, two with the Marlins and another with the Astros. (Atlantic League teams are permitted to add up to two players from outside leagues after September 1.) The homer was his first with his new team.

The Crabs extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth, on a Grant Zawadzki RBI triple and a run-scoring single from Casey Frawley.

The Revolution responded a half-inning later, when Nash led the inning with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Luis De La Cruz followed Nash with a single to right-center, and he later scored as well on an Eric Patterson double down the line in right, to draw York within a run at 4-3.

In the sixth, the Revolution would rally to tie and take the lead. Brandon Boggs smoked a lead-off triple to the wall over the head of right-fielder Fred Lewis, and scored on a line-drive RBI single by De La Cruz with one out to tie the score after Nash worked his second walk of the night. Nick Ferdinand then smoked a ball to center, loading the bases with the single. James Simmons moved everyone station to station with a bloop single to right, which gave York their second lead of the game at 5-4. Patterson's sac-fly to right for his second RBI and a Wilson Valdez run-scoring single to right kept the good times rolling at 7-4 Revs. Valdez would knock SOMD starter Daryl Thompson (6-7) out of the game with that hit, after five and two-thirds innings.

Thompson's final line: 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 6 K. His counterpart Frank Gailey survived to earn the win with five gritty innings, despite allowing 10 hits. Gailey avoided any big innings while striking out four with two walks. The four runs were all earned, but the York southpaw improved to 5-3 on the season after joining the Revs on June 22.

With the lead shaved to 7-6 in the ninth, the Revolution had no trouble tacking on a pair of insurance runs for their second three-run lead of the night. Valdez led off with a single and eventually scored on a Bryan Pounds sac-fly to center. Telvin Nash dropped his second RBI of the night down the line in right, and his single scored Boggs who reached on a catcher's interference call. Nash finished the game 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and three walks, along with the dinger. He leads all active Revs players with a sultry .398 on-base percentage at the close of Saturday's action.

Josh Judy kept things tidy in the home half of the ninth, earning his 11th save. The Blue Crabs went in order on a strikeout, a diving catch in center by Simmons and another strikeout.

York's final road game of the regular season is slated for Sunday at 5:05 p.m. in Southern Maryland, before a season-ending homestand against Long Island and Somerset beginning Monday, lasting through Sunday, September 20.

Notes: The comeback win is the 32nd of the season for the Revs, approaching the club record of 36 set in 2008 and 2014. It is the Revs' sixth comeback win in their last seven victories, and their fourth win in the last eight games coming back from down three runs or more. York improves to 12-11 vs. Southern Maryland on the season, 10-3 in the second half. The Revs have won six of their last eight and seven of their last ten overall in addition to the victory in the suspended game completed on Friday. Nash's home run marks the Revs' league-leading 20th in 11 games in September. The win is the eighth straight in a start made by Gailey. Judy's save is his team-leading 11th of the season and first since July 31. Edward Paredes retired both batters faced in the eighth inning, tying Sean Stidfole (2010-11) for fourth on the Revs' all-time appearance list with his 128th in three seasons with the team. Tony Pena was charged with two runs in the seventh, just the second time in his last 25 appearances the opposition has scored, but stranded two in scoring position to preserve a one-run lead, retiring Zawadski on a liner to first to end the seventh inning. York righty Cody Scarpetta (2-5, 3.98) will face Southern Maryland right-hander Jake Hale (9-3, 2.13) on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 4:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
