Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - With a 6-1 loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs in Game 2 of the Florida State League Championship Series, the Daytona Tortugas face a daunting 0-2 hole in the title round.

The Stone Crabs jumped ahead with three unearned runs in the second inning, and held Daytona down with another strong starting pitching performance. On Friday night, it was Buddy Borden (W, 1-0) who allowed just two singles and a DH Daniel Pigott sacrifice fly in seven innings. He walked just one batter and struck out eight. Daytona hit just four balls out of the infield against Borden, who retired 11 of the last 12 hitters he faced.

Charlotte sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning and plated three unearned runs. A pair of two-out errors sparked the rally, and the Stone Crabs got creative from there.

Kean Wong rolled a beauty of a bunt down the third base line, which third baseman Taylor Sparks overran for an error. No. 22 prospect Justin Williams scored from second on the play, and the Stone Crabs had a 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners, Armando Araiza dropped down a bunt of his own to score Pat Blair from third on a safety squeeze. Hector Guevara capped the inning with an RBI single to center.

Facing a Tortugas offense that has totaled six runs in its first four playoff games, Charlotte's 3-0 advantage was a comfortable one. Pat Blair padded the lead with a sacrifice fly in the third and a two-run double in the seventh.

Former second-round pick Granden Goetzman went 3-for-5, tallying as many base knocks as the entire Daytona offense. He's now collected nine hits, including a homer, in 14 postseason at bats.

Over the last 10 years of FSL Championship play, the winner of Game 1 has gone on to win the series nine times. The only outlier is the 2012 Lakeland Flying Tigers, who beat the Jupiter Hammerheads in five games.

First pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET at Charlotte Sports Park.
